ALC TV Commercial

By Kensy Trochez

Recently Daniel Alvarado, Cynthia Carabantes, and I  created a commercial about the ALC for Mr. Hyvari’s speech class. Instead of doing a regular persuasive speech, we decided we would try something a little more fun.  We had to write the script and plan out the shooting of the commercial.

We decided to make our commercial on the ALC School.   Our group wanted to let everyone see that the ALC is not bad like some people in the community think. Many people think we have school with problems, but we actually have less than others.

At the ALC we have people who care for us, and help us a lot.  The teachers are teachers, but also friends.  They don’t judge us on the first thing we do wrong.  They are there for you whatever you believe in, want to become, or want to do.

We went around the ALC to film the commercial. This was so much fun.  We went to some classes to take video clips. We went to the cafeteria to show the little store we have.

Daniel, Cynthia and Kensy recently made an ALC television commercial…

We even went into the office to show the kind of secretary and staff we have and the way they care for us.

We made this commercial about the ALC to show people that they may have the wrong idea about our school. We hope that after you all see our commercial you, too, will have a positive outlook on this nice school.

ALC student wins prize in talent show

By Teresa Lugo and Kensy Trochez

On Sunday March 5th, The Worthington Youth Council held a Talent Show in Memorial Auditorium.  ALC student Steven Van Lo was one of the winners.

There were more than 40 Worthington youths on stage, starring in special performances of their own.  The talent show started out as a younger performance of four younger girls stepped away to the song Girl Power by the Cheetah Girls.

This show had 17 acts representing kids from grades 6-12.  Prizes were awarded in three different categories.  There was an elementary-age category, a middle school category, and high school category.

This was the Ninth annual Talent Show sponsored by the Worthington Youth Council.  The council has student representatives from grades 6-12.  Their mission is to promote student service projects such as the Christmas Basket giveaway and other after school programs.

ALC student Steven Van Lo won second place in the High School category by singing Feeling You (this is one of the many songs Steven has written).  The first place High School prize was won by Brandon Roth and Kelsy Toso, who sang a duet.

The program was videotaped by the Worthington cable TV-3 and was broadcast last Wednesday.  If you want to watch a web video of Steven’s segment of the program you can do so by clicking the camera icon at the end of the story.

ALC student Steven Van Lo won second place in the Worthington Youth Council Talent Show

Steven VanLo said this about winning second place:  “Each of the experiences I’ve had are different .  You learn from the mistakes you make on stage and you learn by different environments you have around you.  It may look easy but its not!”

Feeling You

By Steven Van Lo

First time I met you I was flying the sky

With that sexy walk you looking like a dime

Every time I see you babe

I quiver like a ball

Running shill right down my neck I think it’s worth it after all

I think it’s heaven sent

Now feeling live again

You know I like it because it’s ever lasting

I know that you can take this pain away

Let hold you tight cuz I want to love you right everyday…

March Blizzards

People in Minnesota are familiar with the phenomenon of a surprise March Blizzard.  Just when we think spring has arrived, we’re pummeled with a massive snowstorm.

The most famous such snowstorm in American history was the March Blizzard of 1888.  This storm lasted from March 11 to March 14 and achieved legendary status.  It has been unmatched in nearly 120 years.

The U.S. Weather Service defines a blizzard as a storm with winds of more than 35 miles an hour and visibility of 500 feet or less. A severe blizzard is a snowstorm with winds exceeding 45 miles an hour.  Temperatures in severe blizzards drop to 10 degrees F or lower.

The "Great White Hurricane” of 1888 paralyzed the East Coast of the United States from the Maryland to Maine.  Hundreds ships were grounded, and 100 sailors died. Trains were unable to move, and power lines and telephone lines snapped.

The Midwestern states were buried in snow. The storm hit with such suddenness that 235 schoolchildren died on their way home from school in Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas and the Dakota and Montana Territories!

The total number of deaths from the 1888 blizzard exceeded 400 nationwide.  Property losses exceeded $25 million.  We have never experienced a winter storm as damaging as was the "Great White Hurricane” of 1888.

Word Trivia:  The word “blizzard” was first used on March 14, 1870, in an Estherville Vindicator newspaper story after a severe Iowa snowstorm.

Poet's
Corner

 Music

A Poem by Alie Paine

The pounding of a drum,
the strum of a guitar.
These sounds can be heard,
no matter where you are.
The rhythm of a voice,
belting out a song.
All these sounds together,
make you feel like you belong.

When you feel a little mad,

or even a whole lot worse.

Crank up the volume,

as you scream and you curse.

Let the music take you away,

soaring high and free.

Splash into a wave of song,

in a beautiful rhythmic sea…
