v     Summer 2008 Staff Development is open to all district employees free of charge.  However, a $10 deposit per class is required with registration. This deposit will be returned to the participant upon attendance at the class; registrants who fail to attend the class after registering will forfeit their deposit. It is recommended that registrants pay the deposit with a personal check made out to ISD 518 (one per class); the check will not be cashed unless forfeited. Deposits must be received by 2 weeks before the class is to begin. (Note: if opportunities included in the catalog are sponsored by groups other than ISD 518; additional fees may apply for these opportunities.)

                                                                 

v     For those participants outside of ISD518, the fee shall be $20 per class hour per person. Payment should be made to: District 518 Staff Development. Registration can be done via e-mail or telephone, but payment must be received by 2 weeks before the class is to begin (please include a copy of the name & date of class for which payment is to be applied).

 

v     Classes with fewer than 6 registrants by 2 weeks before the class will be cancelled.  All registrants should provide summer contact information for notification about whether the class will or will not be held.

                                                           

v     Please note where classes will be held.  Specific rooms might depend on the cleaning schedule.

 

v     District #518 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are available for attending Staff Development classes: 1 hour = 1 CEU.

To register for any of the staff development classes listed in this catalog, please contact Myrna Nystrom via e-mail (myrna.nystrom@isd518.net). If you do not have access to e-mail, please leave a message with the High School office at 376-6121.

 

If registering via e-mail or telephone, please forward the deposit for class through in-district mail or deliver it personally to the high school office.

Please include your name, a phone number or email address at which you can be reached for confirmation or cancellation, the date and title of the class for which you wish to register.

June 17 & 24               iMOVIE (all)

                                    Middle School, Room _______, 9:00 – 11:00 (4 CEUs)

Have you ever wanted to create a movie to use in your curriculum? Perhaps you would like to demonstrate techniques or procedures, or show students the proper way to eat during a sales dinner, or what body language to avoid during an interview. In this class you will learn how to create your own original movies with easy-to-use iMovie software. Participants will learn how to make video clips, use video equipment, create and edit background music, and put it all together into a movie that can supplement your classroom teaching.

 

 

June 17                        What is VISTA (all)

What is VISTA?  The latest in operating systems. How is it different from XP or 98? Come explore the new operating system and be ready when it comes your way. We’ll learn about gadgets and other differences in this operating system.

 

 

June 18 & 19               Film Study Class (all)

Learn how to be a critical viewer of film.  Look at literary, dramatic, and cinematic aspects of film.  A variety of movie clips will be viewed and analyzed.

Down with Google!  As your library media specialist I would like you to encourage your students to use subscription databases to meet their research needs rather than Google and Wikipedia.  I will introduce databases we have access to and give you time to explore them.  The databases are:  InfoTrac, ProQuest, WebOPAC, CultureGrams, World Book Online SIRS Decades, ACT Online Prep, Teen Health and Wellness, and EBSCO.

 

 

July 8, 15, & 22           Book Study: The MI Strategy Handbook (elementary)

Have you always wondered about Gardner’s Areas of Intelligence?

Take some time to study this practical book that showcases 800+ strategies to facilitate multiple intelligences in the Elementary classroom. 

This book will help you explore the following:

*how to help the child to understand better his or her own brain

*how the child can creatively build a strategy bank that taps strengths to

work on weaknesses

*how to find the child’s perceived strengths

*how to create a hypothesis about the learner and the types of interventions

to try

Many people at Prairie have this book; let this book club be a fun and friendly part of your summer reading plans.

                                    This class will be also be offered on July 10.

                                     

New for 2008 – 2009!!!  Beginning this fall, employees will be required to keep track of their CEU hours as well as maintain their record sheet and folder.  All this has been done for you in the past.  Come and learn the easy way to stay on top of your licensure requirements!

 

You will also learn about the process of renewing your 5-year teaching license!  This class is for first timers as well as those of you who have renewed many times. 

 

You will:

~ learn about the state requirements

~ learn about the tracking sheets to keep your hours accumulating

~ see how the committee keeps track of your individual clock hours

~ find out who to go to and where to find help

~ learn how to fill out the clock hour forms on the server

~ learn how to renew your license on line

 

But more importantly, you will have time to organize your CEU paper work and fill out the CEU forms, all with the help of the chairman and secretary of the Continuing Education Committee!

 

Bring your current license to class with you along with any clock hour certificates that you have not already turned in for credit.

 

 

July 9                           Teaching Creative Thinking in Elementary School (Elementary)

Let yourself investigate the power of creative thinking, or revisit the power you have experienced in using creative thought.

Through this hands-on study of creative thought the learner will:

                                                            -elaboration

*review examples that will stimulate and encourage these abilities in the Elementary classroom

*explore ways to provide feedback and evaluation of these abilities

Big changes from Office 2003. Come and see how it looks. We’ll do some hands on and get some great tips to find out how to do the same things in Office 2007 that you could do in Office 2003. We’ll look at Excel, Word, Power Point, and also take some time to look at Outlook and how to use Calendar.

Do gifted readers need coaching?  Are some activities more useful for the gifted reader than others? What should AR do for the gifted reader?  If you feel like having some good conversation about reading this class is for you.

Spend a short time reviewing the characteristics of a gifted reader.  The course will offer opportunity to share and create ideas that will serve the gifted reader.  Explore enrichment opportunities and materials.  Begin to create a menu of options you may want to use next fall.  You will have time to work if you like.

Take some time to play with the critical thinking skills you value.  Critical thinkers make better readers and can improve the learning climate.

This class offers experience with the following skills:  patterns, imagery, logic, compare, and  classify.

How can these skills be enhanced and used as part of your classroom culture?  Join the group in exploring some practical ideas that will improve the intellectual climate of your classroom.

 

 

July 23                         Games as Strategy Builders in Elementary School (Elementary)

                                    Prairie Elementary, Rm 212, 1:00 – 3:30 (2.5 CEUs)

Students are embedded in the “gaming” generation…get in on the fun.

Games provide a large number of opportunities for teaching thinking.  Well organized plans can help to implement games as sponge activities.  This class will encourage you to implement games in your classroom.  We will look at the value of games, the management of games, and the way to introduce strategy and thinking with your students as you teach them to reflect and grow using games.

Bring some of your favorite games and share and/or grow your list of games by gathering ideas from your peers.

August 5                       SMART Board  - for beginners or intermediate level (all audiences)

Learn the basics of using a Smart Board.  You can create the lessons on any computer so they are ready to use with a projector and Smart Board.  The uses of the Smart Board are endless:  use the gallery to create games to review skills or introduce new concepts, hyperlink your presentations to websites that are part of your lesson, have manipulatives ready to demonstrate a skill.  Explore the possibilities.  There will Smart Boards located around the area for you to try. 

 

When registering, please indicate your interest in beginner or intermediate level; if there are enough registrants, the class will be divided into two groups.

 

 

 

August 12                     Classroom Response System  (all)

In this session you will learn how to use the Classroom Response System (the use of “clickers”).  Topics covered will include how to down load and install the program, how to write and manage quizzes, how to run reports, and how to avoid possible cheating.

Join Sheryl Hoekstra and Deb Heck August 19, 20, and 21 from 8:00 to 11:30 am in using The First Six Weeks of School by Paula Denton and Roxann Kriete to apply Responsive Classroom strategies to prepare for the new school year.  There will be time for sharing ideas and working in classrooms to prepare morning messages, guided discoveries, Hopes and Dreams, etc.  If you need a book, let Sheryl know, and she will order one for you.
