POSITION OVERVIEW:
AmeriCorps Promise Fellows
work with local organizations across the state of Minnesota to promote student
success, engage youth in service and mobilize adult volunteers. Nobles County
Integration Collaborative is seeking two AmeriCorps Promise Fellows to work with
area youth on five goal areas: academic achievement, civic engagement, cultural
competence, college & career exploration, and leadership development. These
positions involve working with students at school during the school day and
coordinating out-of-school time programs for secondary students.
POSITION
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Functions:
- Serve as a coordinator
of out-of-school-time programs designed to provide academic support through
tutoring and to promote leadership development, civic engagement and
cultural proficiency amongst secondary youth.
- Recruit volunteers to
sustain youth opportunities within the member schools districts targeting 5th
through 12th grade students
- Provide opportunities
for youth to experience quality relationships and increase their
understanding of the value of education throughout life
- Document key contacts
and insights from program implementation and conduct program evaluations
- Invest time in
personal professional development
Marginal Functions:
- Assist with various
programs that Nobles County Integration Collaborative coordinates
- Utilize technology to
enhance programming (computers, digital cameras, web cams, etc.)
- Speak publicly to
promote programs or to increase cultural awareness
REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be 18 years old
or older
- A U.S. citizen or U.S.
national or have status as a lawful permanent resident alien of the United
States
- Able to serve in a
full time position
- Please note that final
candidates will be required to successfully pass a background check before
being officially enrolled by the Minnesota Alliance With Youth
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Interest in youth,
service, education and non-profit work
- Strong written and
oral communication skills
- Able to deal
effectively with multiple tasks and able to take the initiative
- Self-motivated, able
to work independently – strong organizational skills are a must
DESIRABLE
CHARACTERISTICS AND SKILLS:
- Associate or Bachelor
degree in youth development, education, social justice or related field
- Volunteer or work
experience with youth programming
- Candidate who is
bilingual and/or bicultural
TYPICAL WORK
ENVIRONMENT:
- Tasks take place in a
combination of office, classroom and community settings
- Work involves
environments that are noisy with many young people and adults demanding
attention
- Position involves both
independent work, as well as team work
BENEFITS:
As a full-time AmeriCorps
member, Promise Fellows serve 1700 hours from August 15, 2010 to August 14, 2011
and receive: Modest Living Allowance (approximately $950/month, pre-tax); Health
Insurance; Qualified Student Loan Deferment; $4725 Education Award upon
successful completion of service; On-going extensive support and training.
