It was quite a day of celebration and fun, along with a little learning too. As a tech employee in the district the first thing I think about is all the work involved for our department in getting these devices up and running for the staff and students. Each device goes through a lengthy process of setup before it's ready for the end user. With all that work to do, it's easy to get discouraged and feel as though we just have more to do! Seeing the teachers and administrators circled around their Lead Teachers during the rollout, made all that work worth it. The staff was so engaged and did a wonderful job of working with each other to utilize yet another fantastic tool in the classroom to assist in educating the children of District 518.

FLY Perception Survey

<itunes:author>Ernst, Amy</itunes:author>

On behalf of your school district, the Southwest Marketing Advisory Center (SMAC), located on the campus of Southwest Minnesota State University, is currently conducting a longitudinal study on general attitudes and perceptions toward the new Achievement Initiative.
Southwest Minnesota Spelling Bee

Saturday, April 20 proved to be a beautiful, sunny day in more ways than one. Worthington Middle School’s Spelling Team headed to Fulda to compete in the annual Southwest Minnesota Spelling Bee. Nine area schools participated for a total of 54 superb spellers. In a combined effort, Worthington’s team: Kalea Appel, Brigitte Beall, Chris Lopez, Anna Meyer, and Davis Moore were able to bring home the 2nd place trophy. In the individual competition after the first written round of 40 words, Kalea, Chris, and Davis advanced to the second round where thirteen spellers each had to spell “accidentally, expedite, myth, strenuous, and ankle”. The scores from this round were added to their scores from the written round to determine the top five. Davis and Kalea made it to this elite group of spellers where they prevailed after many rounds, taking home the first place and second place trophies respectively. Congratulations to Davis, Kalea and our Worthington Spelling Team for a stellar performance!

Every year in October, Worthington Middle School holds a fund raiser to benefit the American Cancer Society. This year during the fund raiser, the middle school student council sold bracelets, backpacks, lapel pins, necklaces and lanyards. In total, the student council raised seven hundred dollars to benefit cancer research! However, this year was different. The student council was moved by the knowledge that one of our own District 518 students was battling this terrible disease. In response, the students unanimously voted to donate five hundred dollars to the Stephanie Romero fund. The remaining funds were donated to the American Cancer Society in hopes that one day we will see an end to this disease.

The reason? An incentive field-trip.
Just before the sun made its first appearance, the students climbed aboard a waiting school bus and headed west to the historic city of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. As the bus bounced and jostled along I-90, most of the intrepid adventurers chatted in groups or listened to iPods. A few of the more pragmatic students, however, took the opportunity to reclaim the lost hour of sleep they had recently forfeited in order to make the trip.

The Middle Level Alternative Program took a quick trip into Lakefield on Friday, September 28th to help assemble meals for children in orphanages across the globe. The meals also can go to areas of the world where natural disasters have made access to healthy food very difficult. The seven middle school students and their chaperones assembled just over 300 meals in the forty-five minutes! Each student had a different job on the assembly line, from adding soy meal, rice, vitamins or carrots, to weighing, sealing, and packing the bags. As each person got more efficient, the team was able to increase the speed of production and really pack those boxes. Way to go students!

MN West Worthington Career Expo

<itunes:author>Galvez, Rhina</itunes:author>

On Wednesday, September 26th, seven students from the Worthington ALC attended the Career Expo sponsored by the Southwest/West Central Service Cooperative at the MN West campus. While in attendance, students visited a variety of interactive booths gaining information on a number of jobs available to them post-graduation and post college. In addition to the booths, students attended a game show put on by the event. This game show was designed around the Price-is-Right and asked for active audience participation and individual involvement from each school. The audience consisted of four local schools including the Worthington High School and the Worthington ALC. Each school answered a number of questions on topics focusing on job need and growth, job specifics, and education. After the final round, the Worthington ALC was tied in first with Beaver Creek High School. During the tie-breaker round, Marina Peralta represented the Worthington ALC keeping them neck-and-neck for 5 questions. The final question that ended the game questioned the salary of a physical therapist. With several of her classmates helping, Peralta submitted the correct answer bringing home to trophy for the Worthington ALC. In an audience of about 80 students, the seven Worthington ALC students walked home proud of their accomplishment.

College and Career

<itunes:author>Galvez, Rhina</itunes:author>

http://www.isd518.net/Websites/isd518/images/Schools/ALC/XXWhee.pdf
