Da Store – a new ALC project

By Liz, Patty and Zara

This quarter the ALC started a new class. This new class gives students an opportunity to experience how to manage a retail store. The class is made of six students and one teacher. The students are Patricia, Mayra, Zara, Brittany, Elizabeth and Steven.  The teacher is Mrs. Shoberg. The new class began 3rd quarter.

Unfortunately, things didn’t turn out the way they were supposed to be. It turned out that we needed a license to be able to run the store on the ALC campus. One of the requirements is to get the store approved and get a license from the school board.

It was a real big set back for when Mr. Langseth poured the cold bucket of water on us. It was really disappointing to have everything planned out and ready to go, and then Mr. Langseth informed us we were not able to continue with our plans.

Recently the class made a power point presentation. We gave this presentation to the school board. In this presentation we showed the school board what the class is going to be about. We showed how we plan to use funds to buy products (Cont. à)

to sell, and how we are going to spend the money we earn.  The school board approved our plan on Tuesday, February 17.

One other thing that Da Store is working on is cans collection. We set up a container in the end off the hall going towards the cafeteria. We put pink signs on it to show what it is. This container is for empty pop cans collection. If there are any pop cans the students at the ALC would like to donate, they can put them in this container and the students of Da Store will collect them and get some money for the empty cans.

Even though we were set back on the making of Da Store, we kept trying and have now reached our goal. We ask that you help us with this project and make it a success.  We will appreciate your cooperation!J!

Two-headed baby dies after surgery

By Sara Schirmacher

In Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, hospital doctors underwent a long 10-hour surgery on a 2-month-old baby by the name of Rebeca Martinez.  She was born on December 10, 2003, and died on February 7, 2004, at the hospital.

During the long 10 hours of surgery, there were 18 surgeons, as well as doctors and several nurses performing and assisting the procedure.   Rebeca was born with another head on top of her cranium!

The doctors at the hospital had said the second head came from a conjoined twin that  did not fully develop.  Without     (Cont. à)

the surgery, baby Rebeca wouldn’t have been able to lift her head at three months.  She had no hope for a normal life.

Although the surgery went well and with the family donating blood for the surgery, Rebeca died around 7 to 12 hours after completing the complicated surgery.  She died from massive hemorrhaging.  The infant also had several heart attacks along with it.

Twins that are connected at the head are rarest of conjoined twins.  Rebeca Martinez was believed to be the first of its kind.

Co-joined twins occur when an embryo fails to fully split into identical twins.  Co-joined twins are sometimes referred to as Siamese twins.

SAN FRANCISCO - Hundreds of gay and lesbian couples lined up at City Hall for the historic chance to marry with the city's blessing. Mayor Gavin Newsom was in clear violation of state law when he told the county clerk to issue marriage licenses to gay couples.

Newsom argued that denying marriage licenses to gay couples is illegal under the California Constitution.  The city's lawyers argued that it is not unlawful for local government to have its own interpretations of the state constitution.

The legal showdown didn't stop thousands of people from lining up outside City Hall in the rain on Monday. They wanted to take part with more than 1,700 other same-sex couples who exchanged vows in recent days. Rather than risk going home still single, many couples camped out over night.

Since San Francisco officials started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples last week, hundreds of gays and lesbians have been married. Most are from the Bay Area but about 50 are from all over the United Sates.

Many of the city workers who process the licenses were volunteering their time. More than 600 same-sex couples are expected to wed Monday, bringing the total to about 2,350.

A Trip to Mexico

With the Nobles County Integration Collaborative

By Nick Rodriguez

Alright, it was almost summer after a long gruesome year with my nose in the books.  It was time to play with the Ladies and hang with the boys. So what would I be doing when summer arrived?

“Whoa – a trip”!  A trip?  What trip and where? A trip to Mexico this summer?  Let me give you the details!

After countless meeting and reviewing the safety precautions, the time had come to go on my first airplane. I was heading down to Mexico.  Growing up I made countless visits to see my relatives from Texas, to California, and Wisconsin. But my favorite trip was going to Mexico just on the border in a little place called “Piedras Negras.”

This time I went further into the so-called “Homeland” and had an unforgettable experience -- an adventure worth writing about.

Beep! Beep! Beep! Slam!.…. Ah what time was it? It was2:30 in the morning and the trip was about to commence. I packed everything I needed the night before and I was waiting for my ride to come so that my adventure could commence. I went to say good-bye to my sleeping family and waved good-bye and left on the bus that took us to Minneapolis.

From then we flew to Houston and boarded another plan to Mexico City with a bus connection to Cuernavaca.

Ah man the plane ride was an experience all its own! The turbulence was not as nerve racking as I was told.  I plan on doing it again. Wow I can remember flying over Mexico City -- that place is humongous.

Coming out of the airport and helping other people with their luggage was exhausting.  Keeping the group together was an interesting experiment. We were told, “Here we are in Mexico City and it’s 6:30ish at night. Guess what? We’re staying in a hotel for the night and leaving in the early morning!” Man, I knew what I was going to do…. EXPLORATION TIME!

(A Trip to Mexico -- Continued

from page 4)

I put on my CD player with my Linkin Park CD and hit the streets not knowing what would come my way. I was mesmerized with the scenery and the brilliant colorful music in my ear. Wow the scenery was absolutely astonishing with such a beauty that words alone could not even describe what I witnessed. As we walked down the street we encountered a woman that was begging for some money to get some food.

The next morning I awoke early to hit the showers and get ready for a new glowing day. After a fabulous breakfast    buffet we hit the road on to Cuernavaca were we would stay and attend school with our new family.  I got my own room with a television and its own private shower. Oh man I was loving it! Not to mention that I had 2 girl roommates in the house!

Every morning our mama would wake us and serve a nourishing breakfast to us! After breakfast she would drive us to the collage to learn how to speak/write Spanish. Later after class we would have lunch and our mama would pack us    (Continued à)

snacks with lots of yummy surprises that tickled my fancy.

We visited many places like downtown, the marketplace, silver town to look at silver jewelries; old churches…  The best one was the Aztec ruins where we climbed the pyramids – a very tiring task because there are two, the Sun temple and the Moon temple.

Eventually, I had to put my chin up and say good-bye to my loving new mama. The trip was worth taking.  You should look into this -- trust me! I’m going this summer again.

Cuz Sami Sayz So

By Sami Koehne

This column will be the school’s advice column.  All of the questions will come from actual people from anywhere. Anyone can ask a question, but there are questions that I am unable to answer. There are also questions that, if asked, I will have to report.

In order to get this column up and running I want to first make sure that everyone knows that there are things that will not be published or even answered.  To keep this column going I will need everyone to take this seriously, and not send disturbing materials to the e-mail account or place unacceptable material into the question boxes that are around the school.

Each question, in order to be answered, has to have a name with it, or some other nickname that I can use to identify the questioner. This makes it easier to identify the question, and the questioner will know for sure that it is their question that I am answering.

Feel free to ask any question that you like, but keep in mind that there are questions that I cannot answer and some questions are against my morals.  I will not answer anything that makes me uncomfortable or threatened in any way. Sorry…

If you are uncomfortable with putting your question into one of the boxes that are in different classrooms, you can also e-mail your questions to:

When you ask a question please leave your first name along with your question. This helps me to address your questions and makes it known whom I am answering.  Thank you…

If you feel uncomfortable leaving your name with your question, please leave a nickname or another form of identification so that you will know when I am answering your question.

Fish population in Mille Lacs is down

By Jason Paplow

Those of you who enjoy fishing the open waters on Minnesota may, on occasion, spend time on Mille Lacs. But this year the lake has been found to have a significant drop in the walleye population.

While nobody really knows why the population is down, some speculate that avid fisherman have been taking too many fish that are too small throughout the years. The state sets an annual "Safe Harvest" of 380,000 pounds of fish.  This is approximately 70,000 lbs less than the 2003 season. Although the numbers of walleye are down, perch, northern pike, and a variety of panfish are down too.

With this decrease in population, there could be a "possible" shortening of the season in years to come. Although this would be an extreme remedy, it would help to create a larger and more healthy population among the fish.

The

Grossest

Place

By Elizabeth DeLeon

       A gross place.

Have you ever

Been in my brothers’ room?

It is the grossest place

At home.

When you walk into the room,

Things in the room start to pop up.

Shirts, shorts, shoes, some socks.

Smells like rotten eggs.

Dark walls,

Dirty blankets on the floor,

Clothes all over,

Shoes everywhere, none match.

The room is like a kitchen.

Dirty glass cups, plates, silverware,

All they need is the dishwasher

To wash the dishes there.

They spend most of their time

 In that room

Maybe that is why

Their room is the grossest.
