How I came to study at the ALC

 By Chol Opiew

My wife and I came from a refugee camp in Ethiopia to Altemont Springs, Florida in 1998.  We were sponsored by St. Stephan’s Church.  We were welcomed into the home of church members Karen and Hank Solberg where we lived for several months.

We eventually moved into our own apartment.  Karen, along with her friends Anita and Nancy, taught us how to cook American food.  We enrolled in English classes at Seminole Community College and quickly learned English.

We learned other things, as well, such as how to ride the city bus.  Buses are much different in America than they are in Africa.

St. Stephan’s Church did many wonderful things for us such as taking us to the beach, to movies and ice-skating.  They helped us adapt to life in America.

When we came, we brought our traditional bracelets of beads with us.  These bracelets were made by my wife Amot.  She made nine different styles.  Karen showed them to the church council, and a picture was published in the Lutheran newspaper. Soon, Amot was making bracelets for other people in the church.

My cousin Peter Owedy told us about Worthington, Minnesota, and the Worthington Area Learning Center (ALC).   Our friends in Florida wanted us to remain there, but they didn’t stop us from coming here.

Our friend Karen contacted the First

Lutheran Church in Worthington.  Pastor Bob met us at the bus station and helped us.  He eventually moved to a different church 130 miles away, and now we have Pastor Richard Ricker.

I began attending the Worthington ALC in 1999.  Marlys Knuth was the director of the ALC at that time.  She started the school back in 1988 to help people who had not yet finished school.  It was a place where people could receive their high school diplomas.  The ALC moved to the former West Elementary building in 2001.  That is where we are now located.

The ALC is a good place to get an excellent education.  The school has the best teachers.  They help all students get caught up with their class work, no matter how far behind they are.

The students at the ALC are friendly.  They come from all over the world, and treat one another with respect.  We have a meeting every Friday with Dean of Students Mr. Paul Langseth where we discuss how to make the school a better place.

I thank the community and Worthington School District #518 for supporting the ALC.  Without it, I would not be able to receive an education.

Lambert wins Alfred E. Newman Award

Area Learning Center student Matt Lambert was awarded the prestigious Alfred E. Newman Award for Educational Excellence.

The award is given each year to an outstanding student whose educational endeavors, enterprise and attitude exemplifies the “What, me worry?” motto of famed magazine publisher Alfred E. Newman.

Lambert was surprised by the award.  “I’m stunned.  I’m overcome.  I’m shocked.  I’m overwhelmed.” said Lambert.

Fellow students, however, were not as surprised as Lambert.  “Are you kidding?” said ALC student Amone Xyphanto.  “Matt’s a natural for this award.  We’re as proud as we can be.”

Teachers were also pleased. “This is great for Matt, and for the school in general,” said ALC teacher Ray Lowry.

MOVIE REVIEWS

By Tiffney Larson

Scary Movie III is frighteningly bad

I recently went to Scary Movie III and I did not enjoy it, because it was ridiculous.  If there were a Scary Movie IV I would not go to it.

The worst part of the movie is that they took the Dumb and Dumber guys who were in the other Scary Movies out.  Another pathetic part was when the aliens were peeing – out of their fingers!  That’s sick.  Also, the Michael Jackson part was worse than ridiculous.

The best thing about the movie is that all the guys in the audience liked the “boob” part in the beginning.  Another good part was when a white boy was rapping with a black guy.  He does a better job, and the black rapper gets shot as a result.

All in all, I did not enjoy the movie.  Most people I know thought it was funny, but I thought it was stupid as $%#@.  I know that if they make a Scary Movie IV, I won’t go because it will be like the other Scary Movies – messed up.

I give Scary Movie III a grade of

ALC student bitten by bat – stricken with rare disease

ALC student Kongkeo Bouthisanh was stricken with a rare form of vampirism after being bitten by a bat during a science field trip last week.  Since that time, Kongkeo has taken on the appearance of either Bela Lugosi, or a bat, depending upon the time of day.

“This is a tragedy for our science department,” said ALC science teacher Kathy Schrieber.  “Last month they were afraid of contracting West Nile virus due to mosquito bites.  Now this.” According to Schrieber, the students are afraid to leave the safety of their classroom for fear of contracting an illness.

Kongkeo was less concerned about the entire matter, saying only “Beware the children of the night.  What sweet music they make.”

ALC food service coordinator Barb Greve noted a dramatic increase in the consumption of ketchup since the bat bite incident.  “We used to use one quart of ketchup per week,” said Greve.  “Lately we’ve used two gallons per day.”

Greve seemed to think that most of the ketchup was being consumed by Kongkeo.
