Mr. Blatti wins award…

Bruce Blatti, principal of Worthington High School, received a surprise award last week.  Blatti was chosen as the top principal in Minnesota by the Minnesota Association of Secondary School Principals (MASSP).

Blatti received an additional surprise when a special school assembly was convened in his honor.  The assembly was apparently arranged by Assistant Principal Laffen and Activities Director Mr. Kuiper.

Last year, Mr. Blatti won the principal of the year honor for the southwest division of MASSP at a meeting in New Ulm.  Last week’s award, however, was a statewide award.

The staff at The Insider offers our congratulations.

  Six more weeks
       of winter!!

Groundhog Day has come and gone, and the furry creature’s prediction is not a good one.

On February 2, the official groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, King of the Groundhogs, Seer of Seers, came out of his burrow in Gobbler’s Knob, Pennsylvania, only to be scared back into his hole by his own shadow.  That’s right – it was a sunny day.  And according to tradition, we need to brace ourselves for six more weeks of winter.  Like that’s a surprise here in Minnesota.

 As Phil put it:

It's time for me to prognosticate.
As I study the sun
It's all about fun.
But I'm sorry to say
I see my shadow today.
When my shadow I see,
Six more weeks of winter there will be!

A New Addition

By Manuel Garcia

Yes people, just like the title says, there is a new addition -- new addition to the list of ethnic food restaurant in the town we know as Worthington. Some of you may also know it as Worthnothingtown.  It just depends on who you hang out with. But enough of that.

The new ethnic restaurant that I am talking about is, of course,  La Hacienda, which serves authentic Mexican food. La Hacienda has been opened for a week.  It was reported on the front page of the Daily Globe, which is where I first heard of it.  That made me curious about trying it out.

Well, after school I decided to go and try out the food they had to offer. When I got there I was served with smiles, and chips and salsa, which is, of course, a classic touch to a Mexican restaurant.

One thing that I noticed was that the menu didn’t have as many items as other restaurants offer, but it was fine, because I really was only hungry for some authentic Mexican tacos. There were also burritos and tortas .  A torta is sort of like a sub. They also have more well known items such as enchiladas.

The items I have mentioned have different types.  For the tacos, there is asada (which is my favorite), de adobada (which is meat made with a sort of seasoning on it), chorizo, and there are other types of tacos. They also have different types of tortas, like the one I like, torta de jamon, or in English, a ham torta a.k.a a ham sub.

La Hacienda – Great Mexican Food

These are just some of the food they serve.  They also serve flavored water which is known in Spanish as agua fresca, and other refreshments. Personally I thought the food was great, and would like to go and eat there again.

After my meal I talked to the owner and I asked him if there was going to be more to their menu later on. He said that yes they are going to add more to their menu, and they are going to make some special foods for the weekends, which means that you will only be able to get that food on the weekends. That’s it for my experience at L a Hacienda, but I advise to go and try it out for yourself, if you don’t, then you don’t know what your missing out on.

Oh yes, and where exactly is this new place located? Well if you knew about the old Asian restaurant called Bangkok Cuisine, that is where La Hacienda is now located. And if you don’t know about Bangkok then just go to the following address to have a taste for yourself, 1719 East Ave. in Worthington.

Trivia Question:  What are the two connections between La Hacienda and the Area Learning Center?

Should ALC Get Open Lunch?

By Tania Gonzalez

On 11-25-04 I gave out a survey to several ALC students.  Out of the 21 people who responded to the survey, we can see how students feel.

At ALC if you want to eat lunch you have to sign up. The consequences of not signing up could leave you hungry all day. We also have a school store, but it’s open only at lunch. It sells nachos, noodles, candy, and drinks. Who can live off of junk food?

“They have snacks, but it wouldn’t be healthy to eat there everyday.” One student wrote when asked do you think the store has enough to fill you.

If you don’t have a job or money you won’t be eating there. Nineteen of the 21 students said they starve when they have no money and forget to sign up for lunch. If they could just go home or to a friend’s house at lunch, then they could eat.

A couple of students said “The ALC feels like a prison when they don’t give us rights to go outside.” Another student’s thoughts were “We are all students just like the WHS, so we should have open lunch like them too.”   Another suggested that students “have open lunch, and if you’re late so many times take it away till they earn it back.”

(Continued à)

ALC is not just a school for troublemakers or anything like that. We all are students, so why not let us out for lunch? What could it hurt to try? If we could all go out for lunch without maintaining a “B” average and doing community service (these are the things we must do now to be eligible for open lunch), students would be better fed and energized for the rest of the school day. You never know, maybe more students would do better in class…

A lil’ about the Honda CRX

By Korey Stinehart

In 1990 a Honda CRX was one of the most popular cars for the old and the young. A lot of people really liked them because they were small and they were really good on gas. In 1991 they cut production of the Honda CRX First generation. They kept production going and they made Honda CRX-Del Sol and that is the Second generation of the CRX. Both of the CRXs only have two seats but they both look a lot different.  You wouldn’t even know they started from the same car. They stopped production of the Second generation in about ‘95 or ‘96.

They have options; there is a SI and a HF. An HF is better on gas but you get robbed of some cool features like a faster engine which is put in the SI.  You also don’t get a sun roof. An HF has a slower engine and is much harder to pull out some horse power. The SI comes stock with about 108 hp and its weight is 2089 pounds

(Continued à)

The SI gets about 29 miles per gallon in town and about 33 on highway.  The HF comes with a max at 62 hp (watch out for that monster) and its weight is 1897 pounds. This car gets about 42 miles per gallon in town and about 52 on the highway. These are both the first generation of the CRX.

The second generation CRX looks a lot different from the First generation and has a lot of different engines and the horse power varies a lot. The First generation has more of a hatchback or a lift back. The second generation has a trunk and it is still only a 2 seater.  Some of these are known as CRX Del Sol. They have more of a selection if you’re into engines and hp. The Del Sol  S-coupe is the lowest of the class and it has the lowest hp. It come stock with about 108 hp and its weight is 2008 pounds. There is also Del Sol SI.  It comes with a little more giddy-up and rolls in at about 130 hp and comes in at about 2414 pounds. The most powerful Second generation of the CRX is the Del Sol that comes with a V-tech engine.  It is about 130 hp and the weight is 2810 pounds. When you deal with CRX they are all 2 seaters.

Why I Hate Mainstream

By: Heath Kane

Okay, I know what your thinking: “Oh here he goes tearing down mainstream music.”

It’s not that there aren't some mainstream bands that I like, but the truth is that non-mainstream bands tend to be more meaningful and tend to actually have, I don't know, a message!

Let me tell you about a few non-mainstream bands that, chances are, you've never heard of but are amazing bands.  These would be bands such as  Pig Destroyer, The Red Chord, Lamb Of God, and As I Lay Dying.

Now here are some of bands that are mainstream and, well as I say, they aren't my favorites but are still acceptable as music, Greenday, Rancid, Metallica, and Evanescence.

(Continued à)

The Red Chord rocks!

Non-mainstream band Pig Destroyer

Now for the worst "Music" on The Planet Mainstream if you can call it music:  Any hip-hop and things like Brittany Spears, Christina Aguilera, Avril Lavigne, and Eminem.

So now you know what music is acceptable and what music is just complete trash.  Of course that's just my opinion I could be wrong…

Video Games:

HALO 2

By Sergio Chaparrro

One of my favorite games to play is Halo or Halo: 2.  Halo 2 is a great game because in Halo:2 you not only play Master Chief, you play an Elite named Arbiter, who has brought shame and dishonor to his alien race.

Through the game you switch between the two and play in very BIG levels. The purpose of the game is to stop "the sacred ring" from being fired upon the world to rid the "flood" (A parasitic alien that invades hosts and becomes an alien).

A good thing about the multiplayer mode is that when somebody is in a vehicle, you can hijack it if it is a "Ghost", "Banshee",

(Continued à)

"Warthog", AKA "The Puma", or the "Spectrum." You can blow up the "Scorpion" and "Wraith" tanks. A bad thing about the game is all the cell and light shading they put in the game. They put too much in.

Aside from that it's a good game. It has four levels of endurance. Easy, normal, heroic, and legendary. It's hard to play on the legendary level

If we were movie stars…
