A new teacher at the ALC

Mrs.Moser

By: Ryan White

I had the opportunity recently to sit down and talk with our new math teacher, Mrs. Moser. Ever since Mrs. Moser took over for Mrs. Shoberg this fall, things are going well for her. She is adjusting to life at the Worthington ALC.

The following is some information I learned during the interview. Here are some Questions that I asked her.

When asked what she likes to do outside of school, she replied that she reads mystery stories, which I really don’t like. She also likes to sew and to cook.

I also asked her where she worked before coming to the Worthington ALC.  Mrs. Moser replied that she worked in another ALC in Austin, Minnesota, before coming here.

Gasoline Prices

By Blanca C.

Gas prices keep rising all the time.  There are those fortunate times when the prices drop back down, but prices have generally been in an upward swing.

(Continued à)

We need gas.   Our vehicles alone use 115 billion gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel each year. What I set out to find out is why the price of gas is always changing.  Over a period of a month, the cost of a gallon of gas can fluctuate by as much as 15 cents or more, as it did between April and May of 2001 and between March and April of 2003.

Usually gas prices go up in the summer.  That’s because lots of people go on vacation so there’s more tourist traffic and this high demand results in higher gas prices.  Prices also increase also when the world crude oil market tightens and lowers inventories.  In some parts of the country gas is more expensive because gasoline in those states is required to meet higher environmental standards in order to reduce the amount of smog.  The extra cost is passed on to consumers.

When you pump $20 into your vehicle, the money is distributed into little pieces which go different places. The chart below shows you where the money goes

How will you benefit from reading this information? This info won’t stop the price from going up, but at least you will understand why.

Deep Thoughts

By Naythen Gross

In my previous story, I wrote about the late, great Kurt Donald Cobain.  In the early 90’s his band, Nirvana, went mainstream with the album Nevermind, featuring hits like “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and “Come As You Are.”  But, according to many true nirvana fans, the greatest album that Nirvana ever made was called In Utero.

The album features songs such as “Heart Shaped Box,” a song written about his wife, Courtney Love, and dedicated to his daughter, Francis Bean Cobain.

It also features the songs “Rape Me” (about people stealing his belongings, and mentally “raping him”), and “All Apologies” (a song written for his Aunt Mari).

The reason this is their greatest album, is because it wasn’t that mainstream.  It was just what Kurt wanted.  He wanted an album that didn’t become “Radio mainstream” because he didn’t want fans to like only one or two of his songs, he wanted the fans to relate to the all of the music.

Who Knows?

By: Naythen Gross

Maybe I’m sane, maybe I’m not

Maybe I’m cold, maybe I’m hot

Maybe I’m here, maybe I’m there

But I can’t be everywhere

Maybe I laugh, maybe I cry

Maybe I’m wet, maybe I’m dry

Maybe I live, maybe I’m dead

Maybe it’s all just in my head

Maybe I think, maybe I don’t

Maybe I will, maybe I won’t

Maybe I cheat, maybe I lie

Don’t ask me, I don’t know why

Maybe I love, maybe I hate

Maybe I don’t believe in fate

Maybe I sleep, maybe I wake

Maybe I give, maybe I take

Who knows how I really feel?

Maybe these feelings aren’t real

Interview with Ms. Workman

By Ramon B.

I recently had the opportunity to interview our new ESL Paraprofessional, Ms. Workman.

Q. Where did you work before coming here to the ALC?

A. At Central Elementary

Q. What College did you attend?

A. I went to a college in Phoenix, Arizona to study electronics.

Q. What do you do here at the ALC?

A. I am an ESL Paraprofessional, but I just help whomever.

Q. What do you think of the ALC so far?

A. I think the school and students here have a bad rep that is not warranted.  I didn’t know what to expect from the students, but so far I love it here, I have had no problems.

Q. Why did you get involved in education?

A. It has always been a life dream of mine to become a teacher because as a teacher I know I can make a difference.

Q. What is your favorite food?

A. I like all food but my favorite is authentic Mexican food.

Q. Tell us about your family.

A. I have 3 daughters, ages 16, 14, and 4.   I also have 4 brothers and 3 sisters and my mother.

Q. Any last words for the staff or students?

A. Yes, I look at our students as if they were my own kids.  If they succeed, then I succeed.

The Father-son presidential

Effect…

The remarkable careers of John Adams, John Q. Adams, George Bush and George W. Bush

John Adams & George Bush

Both men served as vice-presidents to very popular two-term presidents (Adams to George Washington and Bush to Ronald Reagan).

Both fought undeclared wars with foreign countries (Adams with France over the “XYZ Affair”, Bush with Iraq over the invasion of Kuwait).  Both wars began as popular conflicts, but public support quickly waned.

Both men had strong-willed, outspoken wives (Abigail Adams and Barbara Bush).

Both men named their eldest sons after themselves and encouraged their sons to enter politics (John Q and George W).

Both men lost re-election and served only one term.

John Q. Adams & George W. Bush

Both men lost the popular vote in the election (John Q to Andrew Jackson, George W. to Al Gore), but emerged as presidents nonetheless.

How did this happen?  John Q. was declared president by the House of Representatives and George W. was declared president by the Supreme Court.

Both men pursued policies that divided the country (John Q. with his controversial Tariff Act and George W. with his controversial invasion of Iraq).

John Q. failed to be re-elected in 1828;  George W. will fail to be re-elected in 2004.

Ramon & Amanda

Ramon and Amanda have been together for about three years now. In their free time they like to go out to eat, depending on Amanda’s craving on what she feels like eating. Both of their favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. But soon it will be Christmas, and that’s the day their bundle of joy is due to be born. They haven’t really thought about getting married and all that.  They are just taking one day at a time.

They like to hang out with their friends, and Angel yells at Frank because of his interest in natural herbs. Frank likes to eat pizza. Angel has a messy room and makes Frank clean it. They both work at McDonalds. In the future they plan not to fight. They aren’t really sure about marriage yet but they do plan to stay together.
