Kerry wins ALC student Election

Bush wins nationwide

High voter turnout seems to have favored John Kerry in the ALC student/staff election.  Kerry emerged the winner in that election.  Meanwhile, George Bush emerged the victor in the election nationwide.

With 85% of ALC students and staff voting, Kerry took 43% of the total vote compared to George Bush whose tally was 37%.  The rest of the vote was divided among third party candidates.  Nationwide, the figures were 51% for Bush and 49% for Kerry.  Kerry conceded the election after it became clear that Bush won a narrow victory in the all-important state of Ohio.

At the ALC, U.S. Representative Gil Gutnecht was re-elected with 44% of the vote compared to 23% for Independence Party candidate Gregory Mikkelson and 27% for Democrat Leigh Pomeroy.  Gutnecht also won a commanding victory in the real election.

The tightest race in the ALC student election was between District 22A candidates Doug Magnus and Kathryn Ness.

Magnus won with a one vote margin.  In the actual election, however, Magnus won with a commanding 58% of the vote.

Rod Hamilton easily defeated Richard Peterson in the ALC District 22-B race.  The real election was much closer.  Hamilton won by a whisker-thin margin.

Claire Gerber was re-elected Nobles County Commissioner by ALC students, though challenger Vern Lestico won the actual election.  Mike Woll defeated incumbent City Councilmember James Elsing in both the ALC and the actual elections.

ALC students favored the Sunday Liquor ordinance by a ratio of 73% to 21%.  Several students work in local restaurants.  They said the proposed ordinance would give them more working hours.  However, Worthington voters soundly defeated the proposal.

Teen pregnancy:  Good or bad?

Many teenagers in Worthington are pregnant or have been pregnant. Some people say they are too young and others say its okay. Here at the ALC we have several mothers and soon-to-be mothers.  We decided to speak with a few and get their opinions.

This week we spoke with two people and this is what we came up with…

Amanda Rodriguez-Aguilar

What was your first reaction when you found out you were pregnant?

I was scared but excited and very happy.

What was your first choice: to keep it, adoption, or abortion?

I guess everyone has thoughts about aborting at least once because some people aren’t sure if they are ready for it. But I was sure I’d keep my baby.

How has this situation changed your life?

My life is good, maybe better because now I have this little angel that motivates me to do better and to especially think twice about everything. I make sure everything I do is for her and, I make sure to thank God that I have her with me in the morning when I awake and next to me before I sleep. She’s the only one I have in mind every second of the day.

What do you think about teen pregnancy? Do you think it’s good or bad?

I know its bad in a way because we’re babies ourselves except just growing up too fast.           (Continued à)

Amanda and Mia Rodriguez-Aguilar

Are you glad you made the choice you made?

Yes because my daughter is my world now. It’s hard to believe how much you can actually love and care for someone.

Virginia Cerda

What was your first reaction when you found out you were pregnant?

I was very happy.

What was your first choice: to keep it, adoption, or abortion?

Keep it, of course!

Are you glad you made the choice you made?

Yes because he was a gift from God and some people don’t get that chance.

How has this situation changed your life?

I am reaching my goals more.

What do you think about teen pregnancy? Do you think it’s good or bad?

It’s okay if you are responsible enough.

If you could, would you change anything?

No.

Two more students give their views next week…

“Jookie” Answers your questions…

-      Should same sex marriage be

       allowed?

Yes!   President Bush has issues against same-sex marriage, yet he chose a vice-presidential running-mate whose daughter has a female “partner.”  What gives?

-         How important are jobs in our society?

Very important. Your job affects everything about your life.  Everyone’s life revolves one way or another around a job.

-         What is going to happen to taxes this year.

Who knows?  It’s our time to make decisions and take action!

-         Which candidate had the better plan for the war, in Iraq?

Who knows?  Students for Bush think: Winning the war, then bringing everyone back home safe is the best idea. For Kerry, students said he had a plan for bringing U.S. soldiers back home, but it wasn’t very clear…

(Continued à)

-         Do you think anything is going to happen in Afghanistan, since Bush went straight from Afghanistan to Iraq?  What will to happen to Al Quiada?

At this point many people have probably forgotten about Afghanistan, but never let 911 be forgotten!  Dat’s tha’ truth, n’ tha’truth hurts.

If we were movie stars…

VERY Deep Thoughts

By: Naythen Gross

Have you ever wondered why you never see mimes and clowns in the same place at the same time? Well, you probably think that mimes and clowns get along, but I beg to differ!  Clowns and mimes used to get along just fine, until something drastic happened.

It all started many millions of years ago, when the mimes and clowns lived in perfect sanctity.  This is also way back when mimes and clowns were alike, and both were very colorful.  Then, one day, a clown decided to pick a fight with a mime, thus starting a chain of events, and eventually the clowns won the first battle of the ever-famous Clown-Mime battle.

At this point the clowns imprisoned them in invisible boxes that are VERY small, and tight.  They also stole the color of the mimes, and also their voice boxes, thus making them mute, and colorless.

In many years, there will be another huge battle between the mimes and the clowns.  And the battle will rage on for countless amounts of minutes…and who knows maybe you will be in the midst of the epic battle.  The question is, which side will you choose the mimes or the clowns?

Naythen Gross, a mime or a clown?

Fun facts about clowns

Clowns have existed for thousands of years. A dwarf clown was known to have performed as a jester in the court of Pharaoh Dadkeri-Assi 4,500 years ago!  Court jesters have performed in China since 1818 before Christ.

Throughout history most societies have had clowns.   In the year 1520, Spanish Conquistador Hernan Cortes discovered that Moctezuma's court included jesters similar to those in Europe. Aztec dwarf clowns and hunchbacked buffoons were among the “treasures” Cortes presented to Pope Clement VII upon returning to Europe.  Most Native American tribes had clown characters. These clowns played an important role in the religious life of the tribe.  In some cases, clowns were believed able to cure certain diseases.

Friendship

By Miss Ammone X.

My secret was chanced upon to reveal,

It pains me much for it wouldn’t conceal.

Were there chances for it not to be shown?

It was obvious; the truth needed to be known.

Frown with sorrow, tears I’ve cried,

Never done much except to deny.

Through denying at all I’ve come to see…

Why outwalk the facts – the truth of me?

Time slipped by and days went by,

Yet the one thing that I couldn’t deny.

Never have I known my one true dignity,

Until I met this someone

Who presented opportunity.

Who came into my life as a friend of mine,

Who will never changes, who’s one of a kind.

Friendships, we have had us a few,

But my feelings have always got me through.

Feelings that were held, yet couldn’t be told.

Confessions I’ve made with my heart

And my soul.

Graceful I’ve reached not only for friendship,

But for love and love I receive.

With my love, I’m willing to sacrifice.

Enlightening my thoughts, seeing the happiness.

The guilt of my secret – in silence for so long.

Now knowing the truth, I’ve became strong.

Thomas Jane in Artisan Entertainment's The Punisher

Movie

Review

By Ramon B.

The Punisher

I recently rented the movie The Punisher and I thought it was a good movie. This movie is a comic book action-hero type of movie that is very fast paced so you can’t even leave the room to get a drink of water without missing out.

This movie is based on Frank Castle (Thomas Jane), a delta force op going into retirement. Everything is going smooth on his last mission when all of the sudden his team accidentally shoots down a mobster/business man’s son. Castle’s worst nightmare comes true as mobsters decide to retaliate not just against Castle but against his entire family.  In the end, Castle must use all the techniques and skills he has learned in his past 20 years to survive.

I give this movie a rating of 4 out of 5 stars

Photos that will never make the news…

We received a photo e-mail the other day that reminded us that in our everyday lives we tend to forget what’s going on elsewhere in the world.  We forget that the brave men and women of the armed services are just like us.  They have family and friends back home who love them very much and are praying for their safe return…
