 ALC Prom TV Commercial

By Tammy Jimenez

I created a TV commercial about the ALC prom for Mr. Hyvari’s speech class.  Our speech class did the commercials instead of doing normal persuasive speeches.

I am on the prom committee and decided that a commercial would be a great way to promote our ALC Prom.  It is a very exciting because the 2006 ALC prom is a great way to show off our school, especially to the people who think we can’t handle a prom.

Mr. Hyvari had me start by writing a script.  This made shooting the commercial much easier.  I started out with a basic outline:  Introduction, background, supporting my opinion, making concessions, and the conclusion.  Under each heading I included the things I wanted to talk about.  Then I turned it all into the script.

The next step was to shoot the commercial.  We were able to borrow Mr. Lowry’s video camera.

Tammy makes her debut as a TV director…

Since the prom theme is going to be The Enchanted Forest, we decided a good location would be Mr. Hyvari’s room.  He has a fun forest scene painted on the wall in the back of his room.

I decided that I didn’t want to do the commercial by myself so I was able to get Leticia to help out.  Lety is also on the prom committee so it made sense to have her in the commercial.

This commercial gave us an opportunity to promote our prom and thank our many sponsors.  We can still use all the help we can get, so if you’re available to help, give us a yell.

As for all of you students, we can’t wait to see you on May 12 at this year’s ALC prom.

The Meaning of Christmas

By Tammy Jimenez

Christmas is an annual holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus. Christmas festivities often combine Jesus' birth with various other customs, many influenced by earlier winter festivals.

The date as a Christ’s birth is traditional.  It is not

really considered to be his actual date of birth. In most places around the world, Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25. Christmas Eve is the day before Christmas, December 24.

Many British countries celebrate Boxing Day which is the day after Christmas, December 26. In Catholic countries, Saint

Stephen's Day or the Feast of St. Stephen is December 26.   Many British countries celebrate Boxing Day which is the day after Christmas, December 26. In Catholic countries, Saint Stephen's Day or the Feast of St. Stephen is December 26.

The Armenian Apostolic Church observes Christmas on January 6. Eastern Orthodox Churches still use the Julian Calendar and celebrate Christmas when 25 December occurs on their calendar.  That happens to be January 7 on our calendar, the Gregorian calendar.

I’ve also found out how the word Christmas became a name for this holiday. The word "Christmas" is a contraction of the two words "Christ's Mass.  It comes from the Middle English Christemasse and was first recorded in 1038.

In early Greek versions of the New Testament, the letter Χ is the first letter of Christ. Since the mid-16th century, X was used as an abbreviation for Christ, so Xmas became an abbreviation for Christmas.

Christmas is a time to be with your friends and family, have dinner, and to open presents. So spend some time with your loved one and have fun this Christmas Day.

Have a Happy Valentine’s Day

By Tammy Jimenez

Valentine's Day is a holiday celebrated on February 14. It is the traditional day when lovers express their feelings for each other by sending Valentine's cards, giving candy, or presenting flowers.

The holiday is named after an early Christian martyr named Valentine. The day was later mentioned by Geoffrey Chaucer in a Middle Ages poem, and Valentine’s Day became associated with the Medieval tradition of courtly love.

To me I think Valentine’s Day is a time for people to spend time with their family and their loved ones. To some other people it’s a time for gifts and to do special things for girlfriends, wives, husbands, boyfriends, or others who are special to you.

For some people getting and giving gifts is a big part of Valentines Day. I think gifts are a part of it, but Valentine’s Day isn’t all about getting things.   I won’t lie to you – I really like getting stuff, but it doesn’t

show you how much that person loves you.  It’s just some thing to make you happy for a while.

I think Valentine’s Day is a really nice time to spend time with the ones you love or really care about. My son and I had to get his Valentine’s Cards for his class ready, so the day became a time I was able to do something with someone I love.

So I hope this Valentine’s Day is a special day that you spend with someone you care for and love.

Thoughts on Tammy

By ALC Students and Staff

I will always remember Tammy for being a loving and caring mother to her son, Romeo.  She would tell me things about him and you could see the love she had for him.  Also, I’ll remember her hard work she did at school when she knew she was going to graduate.  That was a big honor for her.  Her friendliness and smile will be missed. - Barb Greve ALC Para

Tammy was one of the nicest people I have met. She was such a strong person and always spoke her mind, that’s why many of us loved her. She had genuine interest for everyone and always had a bright outlook on her life no matter what she was going through, always with a big smile on her face. Even in the little bit of life she was allowed she accomplished much, having a loving son just like her, and was about to graduate, something in which we can all be very proud of her for. She was a great friend and it’s her strength, love, and determination that I will miss but always remember her for. Tammy, we love you and will miss you a lot. - Jeanette Aguilar, Friend

You couldn’t help but like Tammy – she was a girlie girl, she loved jewelry, purses and her cell phones.  Most of all, Tammy loved her son Romeo, and she was a very good Mom to him.  I’ll miss Tammy’s laughter, her spitefire personality and her funny little walk. I feel blessed to have known Tammy. Cec

The thing I will remember most about you Tammy, is your powerful smile and how it would light up a room with its beauty!  Your vibrant personality will live on through all the lives you inspired. - Jill Bents

I will always remember Tammy as a funny and loyal friend. She was always there for anyone in the good and the bad! I’ve known Tammy since we were in the elementary she was always a great friend, she wasn’t a person that would start problems with people, and plus she was such a great mother to her child Romeo, which she will be looking down on. She was able to accomplish some things, like graduating. Her son will be proud of what kind of mother he once had, and her mom, brother and sister will also be proud of having such a great family member which will always be kept in their prayers and hearts! We love you sooo much Tammy and we will always keep you in our hearts and prayers, watch us from up above and protect us cause now we have an other angel up on heaven, you will be missed! Love you! And God bless your family! Xoxo - Your friend, Sylvia Garza!

Big things come in small packages.  I know that this is a cliché but it rings true with Tammy.  I will remember Tammy as a fireball that was not afraid to stand up for what she believed in.  During my first year she was never afraid to tell me how to do my job, because I never did it quite right.  Over the course of the last few years we came to respect each other and agree to disagree.  We shared our humor in the classroom and through out the school.  I am saddened most by the fact that I will not see Tammy walk across the stage in that cap and gown.  She worked hard to get to the end.  My thoughts go out to her family and especially her son who looked up to her as a loving parent. Hyvari

I remember Tammy as a feisty, spirited young middle-schooler.  She always kept that spirit and it served her well as she determined to finish her diploma and make her way.  She was a beautiful young woman with a beautiful young son.  It is so hard to understand this tragic loss.  My condolences to her family. - Betty McAllister

Thoughts on Tammy continued….

There was a charming beautiful soul born on November 22, 1988. The name of this young soul was Tammy Jean Jimenez. She grew stronger and stronger every day and never let anything or anyone get on the way of her dreams. Most of the things she wanted, she got with effort and hard work. She gave birth to another beautiful soul while it became the reason for her to keep going on in life. She was light in our hearts and love in her son’s heart. That soul was magnificent  but, unfortunately, it left us on Friday, May 16, 2008. All I can say is that ,even though I didn’t know her like many others did, I will miss her too.  Friend, LiLi

I’m going to remember her as the girl who lived right on top of my house she was really nice to me and her family even though I didn’t really know her. I know that that I’m going to miss her much and all of the ALC students and staff may God bless Tammy and her family

-- ALC student

Tammy was a beautiful friend and always fun to talk to or be around. She brought conversation to a quiet room and light into a dark place. Tammy was the most outgoing and remarkable person I knew. Everyday walking the halls you could always tell where Tammy was because her voice rang out above the others. She was a very bright individual and brought laughter to the ALC. I am going to miss seeing her smiling face when ever we meet. Tammy will always be in mind and heart.
