Super Bowl

XXXVIII

By Zane Brunk

The Super Bowl was in Houston, Texas this year. The Super Bowl is a worldwide event seen every year by people in many countries.

Asia television sets were tuned in for broadcast of the game. There were eight players on Sunday who once played in Europe.

The Carolina Panthers Quarterback Jake Delhomme has had two stints in the Super Bowl.  The first time Delhomme went to the Super Bowl was as the backup quarterback to Kurt Warner who lead St. Louis to the Super Bowl four years ago.

Sunday's game was beamed to an audience estimated by the NFL at 1 billion people in 229 countries and territories. It was broadcast in 21 languages, including Arabic, Cantonese, Icelandic, Russian, Serbian and Thai. Fourteen television and radio stations from 10 countries also broadcast the game.

Janet’s “accident”

The Carolina Panthers were favored to win over the New England 14 to 17.  The real score ended up 32 to 29 New England.

The halftime show made news this year with controversial performances by rappers Kid Rock and P Diddy, while Janet Jackson, with the assistance of Justin Timberlake, exposed her breast – supposedly by accident – to the world.  This is probably the first and last time MTV will ever be asked to organize a Super Bowl halftime show.

Wolf hunting in Minnesota

Should it be permitted?

By Jason Papolow

Some say people should be able to shoot wolves in Minnesota, while others say no.

Today the wolf population is higher than ever before as you move towards the Canadian border. After being re-introduced into Minnesota, wolves have made an amazing comeback. While they were once on the verge of extinction, their population is now way up.  This might result in a possible hunting season, though it is not likely to happen this year or even next year for that matter.

In 1974, wolves in the lower states were endangered and protected by the US Government. Later in 1978, Minnesota changed it from endangered to protected. This happened because of the high wolf population compared to the other states surrounding us.

Later in February 2001, the Minnesota DNR developed a wolf management plan. The plan shows that our state is able to take responsibility for the wolf when it comes time to take them off the list for good and that Minnesota will ensure the long-term survival of the wolf as required by the federal recovery plan.

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service is set to review Minnesota’s plan and decide whether it does ensure the long-term survival of wolves in Minnesota

What is apenea and when does it occur?

 By Virginia Cerda

Apnea has occurred all over the world.  It can happen at any time and for any baby.  People think that it only happens to certain infants or toddlers.  That is why people don’t take the time to read about the dangers of apnea.  In this article you will read about what apnea is, what is done to help out to control it and what to do if it happens.

Apnea means that airflow into the lungs has stopped.  This happens because the infant or toddler stops breathing or because the windpipe or airways have become blocked.  Sometimes, apnea occurs as a combination of both factors.

A baby with apnea may:

·        suddenly stop breathing for more than 10 seconds

·        have a drop in heart rate below 90 beats a minute

·        become pale or bluish around the mouth and face

·          start breathing again by himself or may need help to restart breathing.

Apnea may happen once a day or many times a day. The more immature the baby is, the more frequent the apnea spells are. As the baby matures, he or sheoutgrows the apnea.  (Continued à)

 baby

Babies normally breath 20 to 60 times a minute.  They sometimes stop breathing for 10 to 12 seconds. These breathing pauses are considered to be normal if the baby begins breathing again by himself and there is no change in the baby's skin color and no drop in heart rate.

Babies may also have a breathing pattern in which they have a breathing pause and then breath several rapid shallow breaths. This is called periodic breathing and is also considered to be normal. So long as the pauses last no longer than 15 seconds.  Pauses that occur with a change in the baby's skin color and a drop in heart rate are not normal.

Some infants with apnea are attached to a monitor that continuously measures heart rate and breathing rate. This type of monitor is called a cardio-respiratory monitor. If the baby stops breathing for too long or the heart rate drops too low, the monitor sounds an alarm to alert you.

When the monitor alarm sounds, you go to the baby and observe. You determine

whether the baby is breathing, what the heart rate is, and whether there is any change in the color of the baby's skin.

Many times the baby starts breathing again  and does not need any help.  If the baby is not breathing, his or her back, arms, or legs must be rubbed.  The baby's head may be turned to a different side or he or she may be turned over. This kind of stimulation is continued until the baby is clearly breathing again.

Several medications can stimulate the part of the brain that controls breathing and can reduce the number of apnea spells. Aminophylline and theophylline are the most commonly used drugs.

Keep in mind why it is important to know about apnea.  Remember, if you don’t know what apnea is, how it is caused or how to help, your baby might die.

Lionel Tate released from prison

By Sara Schirmacher

About 5 years ago a boy named Lionel Tate -- 12 years old at the time -- killed a 6 year old girl by the name of Tiffany Eunick, a playmate of his.  He was then sentenced to prison to be locked away for life.  He was the youngest defendant in the nation to be locked away in prison for life.

Last month the court threw out his first-degree murder conviction.  He continued to claim he had accidentally killed the girl.   Florida law previously said that children convicted of murder could receive life in prison without parole.  Tate’s conviction, however, was overturned.

Tate was released on January 26, 2004, with no bail, but with certain conditions. He made a plea-bargain.  With this deal he pled guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to time already served.  He has to be on house      (Continued à)

arrest for one more year and must receive

counseling.  He will also be on probation for

ten years, and must fulfill 1,000 hours of

Community Service.

The mother of the girl who was killed agreed

with the plea bargain because she said that

Tate was so young at the time.  She also said

he should take responsibility for what he had

done to her daughter and that Tate should

quit saying it was an accident.

Florida Gov. Jeb Bush stated that he “hopes

Lionel Tate will express remorse, at a

minimum, for had what occurred.”

Oval Callout: Sure is hot in here, Justin.

Oval Callout: Perhaps I can be of help…

Oval Callout: A terrible accident!!!

Cloud Callout: Right!

Who cares about Ben and J. Lo?

By Zara Nasers

The yes-no, yes-no relationship between Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez is in the no phase, again. Jenny ended the engagement, according to one of her publicists, no doubt as a means of seeking attention.

A spokesman for J. Lo confirmed the relationship was ended saying, “At this difficult time, we ask that you respect her privacy.”  Sure!  Like Jenny doesn’t want the attention.

Affleck's publicists wouldn’t comment, thank goodness he doesn’t want the attention.

For years, the public has been forced to endure Ben and J. Lo’s public affection for one another in videos and movies.  This includes such duds as Gigli, generally considered the biggest bomb of the year.  If they’re truly broken up for good, perhaps we won’t have to endure any more Ben/J.Lo movie disasters.

Ben and J. Lo were supposed to be married last August, but postponed their plans because, according to Jenny, people were paying too much attention to them.  Translation:  People were not paying enough attention to Jenny.

Since then, the media has followed their every move, as if anyone even cares about them.  Give us a break.

       J. Lo and Ben are scheduled to appear on screen together one more time in Jersey Girl, due out March 19.  Perhaps the studio will just burn all copies of the film and spare us any further agony.

Lopez plays Affleck's wife, but she dies 12 minutes into the movie.  If only life were to imitate this movie…  Good God, could we just be spared any more news about Jenny.
