Mother’s Day

By Virgina Cerda

The first time mother’s day was celebrated was in springtime of ancient Greece. This honored Rhea, the mother of the Gods.

England began to celebrate a day w they called “Mothering Sunday” during the 1600’s.   “Mothering Sunday” was celebrated on the 4th of Sunday of lent. That Sunday was meant to honor the mothers from England. Back in those days people had to work far away from home so some people would live at their employer’s home. But on mothering Sunday was their day off so they would be able to go home and be with their mothers.

Later on Europe had a celebration called “Mother Church.”  As time went by the “Mother Church” and “Mothering Sunday” celebrations blended together.

In 1872 Julia Ward Howe introduced Mothers day to the United States. She would have meetings in Boston Mass every year to remember Mothers day.

In 1907 Ana Jarvis from Philadelphia wanted everybody to celebrate Mothers Day. She convinced her mother’s church in Grafton, West Virginia, that they should celebrate Mothers Day on the second anniversary of her own mother’s death – in other words, the 2nd Sunday of May.

By 1911 Mothers Day was celebrated in almost every state and was. Three years later President Woodrow Wilson announced that Mother’s Day would become a national holiday celebrated each year on the 2nd Sunday of May.

The Importance of wearing a Safety Belt

By: Angel Spillman

We have a vaccine for the leading cause of death for Americans ages 2 through 33 - safety belts said Dr. Jeffrey Runge, the head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Between 1995 and 2002, 12,178 people died in car accidents as a result of not wearing their seat belts. There are 30 states in the United States were police cannot issue a ticket to you for not wearing your seat belt and in those states the death rates are higher. I believe that every state should have a seat belt law that makes it possible for a cop to give you a ticket for not wearing one.

A car comes equipped with lights already installed, because you have to use them. A car also comes with brakes, turning signals, and mirrors, because you have to use them. Do people miss the fact that their car also came equipped with seat belts for a reason? Wearing your seat belt is choosing between life and death every time you get into a car, but why so many people choose to die rather then take the five seconds it takes to put on their belt, I will never come to understand.

I always hear the saying, “It could never happen to me” or “Those kinds of things happen to other people,” but some day it could happen to you. It doesn’t matter if you think you’re the safest driver on the street, the person in back of you or in front of you could make one wrong move and you could be the one to die.

Worthington lost four young girls as a result of a car accident and I saw all the people who cried at school and at their funerals.  None of them were wearing their seat belts.

During that week, we had a Lyceum at the High School on how important is is to always buckle up no matter what the situation.  No one is to say how much a seat belt could have actually helped someone who has died in a car accident, but maybe if they had been wearing it they would have another chance.

An estimated 95,000 people are saved each year due to the usage of seat belts, so be one of the smart people and think when you get into a car. That seat belt is there for a reason. Think about your family and friends, and how much you love them. There is no reason why you don’t have time to buckle up. I’m sure people would rather have you show up late then not show up at all. And I know for a fact that I would never want the burden of letting one of my friend’s die in my car because they didn’t wear their seat belt.

Help us learn

By Mrs. Schreiber

Hi, I teach Science at the ALC.  I am always emphasizing the importance of recycling, reusing and reducing.  Please help me show my students how these ideas cam be accomplished by donating your old magazine issues to our school.  I am looking for magazines about any kind of science that are no older than six months.

The magazines could cover different subjects like the environment, birds, trees, wildlife, chemistry, physics, alternative energy, space, insects, plants, animals, forensic science, genetics, technology, inventions, medicine, and any other science-related topics.

Some examples include Mother Earth News, Popular Mechanics, and National Geographic.  I would love to use these in the classroom for reports and further reading for the students.  They are a great source of current information, and can get students involved in what is going on in their world.

If you have magazines you would like to donate, you can drop them off at the ALC (north wing of the old West Elementary building).  Please use the west door across from the tennis courts on Tower Street.

Thank you for helping me to bring current information to my students.  If you have any questions, please e-mail me at Kathy.Schreiber@isd518.net .

 Pothead Toddler

By Alesha Siefert

In Bardstown, Kentucky, a man and a woman were arrested when an employee at a photo lab saw pictures of their  toddler in a picture with a pot pipe.

John R. Gray, 20, and Elizabeth Lyvers, 24, were charged with first-degree unlawful transaction with a minor.  They also charged Gray with the possession of marijuana and paraphernalia.

The picture was Lyvers’ son, who is about three, appearing to smoke marijuana from a water pipe.  The water pipe did not contain marijuana.

The worker from the photo lab provided the police with an address and they searched their house.  The police are still reviewing the case.

The boy in the picture, and the couple’s one-year-old son, were taken from the couple by social service workers.

Madden NFL 2005

By Adrian Gonzalez

In the summer of 2004, the best selling franchise game will be released once again. What is it? It is Madden NFL 2005. This should be the best Madden NFL game made yet. EA Sports and the developer Tiburon have been working on making this game way before they even put the 2004 series out.

This game will be I little different from the old series of Madden games, why because in the old Madden games your offense was always your best weapon and when you had to play defense you hated it. Now the 2005 series has added more weapons on defense that will allow you to stop the high scoring offensive teams from the past. They added some hard hitting moves that come with their unique animation that will make playing defense a lot more fun play than it used to be.

The lighting in the game has also been tuned up so that you can get better resolution on your screen and better game play. They have tuned up the players a little more so that they look more realistic than they did in the past. While they were doing all this they decided to add some weather effects too, making the weather change throughout the game like it does in real life.

Now we just have to wait till this summer for the game to come out, so that all you Madden NFL fans can spend your money and buy an exciting football game. I know

The improved graphics in

Madden NFL 2005 are superb

To pee or not to pee…

By Steven Blue Arm

Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well. (The Book of Proverbs 5:15)

Believe it or not, urine therapy, or the drinking of urine, is practiced throughout the world.

Urine therapy is used to prevent or cure sickness, and to enhance beauty or to cleanse one's self. Most people who drink urine drink their morning urine straight and steaming hot; others mix it with juice or serve it over fruit. Some use it a couple times a day mixed with a tablespoon of water. And others wash themselves in their own pee to improve their skin quality. Many modern Japanese women are said to engage in urine bathing. And the really crazy ones use their own urine as an enema.

The main attraction of this unusual home remedy is its cost and availability. It is much cheaper than the other "water of life," alcohol    And unlike alcohol, urine is always available.

(Continued à)

Many people claim that there is nothing urine won’t cure. Urine is said to be effective against the flu, the common cold, broken bones, toothache, dry skin, psoriasis and all other skin problems.  It is said to deter aging and is helpful with AIDS, allergies, animal and snake bites, asthma, heart disease, hypertension, burns, cancer, chemical intoxication, chicken pox, enteritis, constipation, and pneumonia to name but a few diseases it is said to cure.

So why bother developing medicines at all if we are all walking pharmacies?  Some supporters of urine drinking say that the medical community has known about the astounding medicinal properties of urine for decades, but refuses to tell the general public about the wonder drug we all carry within all of us.

We offer you, dear readers, a word of caution before you start drinking your own urine.  There may be negative side effects such as diarrhea, itch, pain, fatigue, soreness of the shoulder, fever, etc. So before you try to save some cash, think before you swallow.
