Anglos and Latinos

By Carlos Casian

Mexico is the country that borders the U.S. on its south.  Although the two countries are geographically so close, it’s amazing how culturally far apart they are.

One thing that keeps these two countries apart are barriers involving sterotypes, barriers that should not exist and can be broken down. If racism develops out of ignorance, then we can hope that understanding will lead to acceptance.

There are a lot of stereotypical beliefs latinos and anglos have about one another.  Some stereotypes about latinos are that they all like to eat spicy foods, or only work minimum wage or hard labor jobs.   Many latinos have equally erroneous beliefs about anglos – that they think they know everything, and all have high paying jobs.

In American pop-culture, anglo beliefs about latinos are often represented.  For instant, in movies, Mexicans often have busboy rolls. Anglos usually play the parts of the heroes.  Pop-culture reinforces supposed differences when they could be looking at similarities.  We need to take a step back and see what we have in common.

Carlos Mencia break down cultural sterotypes in his TV show Mind of Mencia

For instance, latinos and anglos share common religions (Christianity or more specifically Catholocism). Both groups want the same things in life:  a better lifestyle for their kids, economic freedom and acquired wealth.

There are a few TV shows that demonstrate how pop-culture stereotypes can change. Take for instance The George Lopez Show or The Mind of Mecia.  In the The George Lopez Show, a middle class Mexican-American plays the main character in a sit-com.  That’s something that hasn’t really been seen before.  In The Mind of Mecia, Carlos Mecia makes fun of the sterotypes both groups have about one another.

For anglos, the tables may finally be turned with more rolls available for latinos and less rolls guaranteed to anglos.  But that’s a change that’s long overdue.

Accident or No Accident?

By Teresa Lugo

On Saturday February 11th 2006, Vice President Dick Cheney was hunting on a ranch down in Texas.  He was with three other people; one of them was Harry Whittington.  While hunting in the ranch, the Vice-President accidentally shot Whittington in the face, neck and chest.

Katherine Armstrong the, owner of the ranch, told the reporters that the accident happened towards the end of the hunting day.  She said it was dark and they were getting ready to go inside.  Armstrong said that Whittington was in tall grass and thick brush and was about 30 yards away from where Dick Cheney was shooting.  This made it hard for Cheney to see Whittington, even though Whittington was wearing a bright-orange safety vest.

On Tuesday February 14, 2006, Harry Whittington was in a stable condition in an intensive care unit in a Corpus Christi, Texas hospital.  But while hospitalized, Whittington suffered a minor heart attack.

Whittington and Hamilton – victims of

Vice-Presidential gunplay…

The physician that is seeing Whittington said that there’s a pellet by the victim’s heart.  Apparently, the pellet is not moving and is not affecting Whittington, so they may not remove the pellet.  Considering Whittington’s age, that might be a risk.

Dick Cheney is the first Vice President since 1804 to shoot someone.  In that year, Vice-President Aaron Burr shot Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton in a duel.

A letter had been published in the Albany Register quoting Hamilton’s “despicable” comments about Burr at a political dinner.  Burr demanded Hamilton an apology, Hamilton refused and Burr challenged him to a duel.  Burr killed Hamilton in the duel.  Burr was charged with murder in New York and New Jersey, but was later acquitted of any crime.

The XBOX 360

is finally

here…

By Cody Henderson

The XBOX 360 is here. It’s the newest generation of video game consoles.  The XBOX 360 was released November 22, 2005 in the United States.

The new console houses two 3.2-gigahertz IBM microprocessors which makes it among the most powerful home computers on the market.  This new console can be almost anything you want it to be –  do pictures, music, video from digital cameras -- anything Microsoft Windows XP can do.  Pretty cool right?

The 360 looks great on a high definition TV, but it’s still nice on any regular type of TV.  The best thing about the 360 is the graphics which are amazing.  The game play is in its own league.

A few problems do exist with the console.  The system can overheat, but you can fix it by a fan that helps cool it better than the ones included inside the system.  I forgot to mention that the XBOX 360 also has XBOX Live, but whether it’s better or not I have no clue.

Although the 360 sounds great, what are competitors like the Gamecube or Playstation 3 doing?  Well, from what I have heard it sounds like the new Playstation 3 will use new processor technology that is supposed to be the most powerful of them all.

The new Gamecube is going to play DVDs, unlike the original version.  It is also supposed to be pretty powerful, but I don’t see it as being as good as either the Playstation 3 or XBOX 360 because Nintendo doesn’t have the money to invest like Sony or Microsoft.  We’ll just have to see…

The XBOX 360 is a great example of improved technology over the past couple years.  If you like to play video games, I would recommend you to go on ahead and buy the 360 – it’s worth the $400 price.

My dad bought us the 360 a couple weeks ago and we got two games for it – a racing game which is sweet and we got Madden 2006 which is real fun.  The graphics are great and the details are awesome.

Designing your own web page

By Sylvia Garza

This story is about how you can make your own web site. Having your own web site is a different way to get to know people.  Web site designing is also a good way to spend your spare time and learn new things about the computer.

If you want to make your own web site, you can log on to www.piczo.com. On that web site you will be able to see others’ pages to give you ideas of how you want yours to look.  You can get ideas, but try not to make yours look too similar to the ones you looked at.

This web site not only shows you other different kind of web sites but also shows you step-by-step on how to design your own.  I’m making one also but I’m not quiet done with it.

Web page design is available to everyone

I heard about this piczo web site from others who made their own pages.  That’s how I learned about it.  Now I help others with their web sites.

The cool thing about this web site is that you’re able to make whatever you want on it.   When people see your web page, they will know you a little better just by looking and reading what you write about yourself.

Ask me for the address to my site and you can see what I’ve been able to do.

Movie Review

A day without Mexicans

By Carlos Casian

Un dia sin Mexicanos  (A Day Without Mexicans) is an independent film by Sergio Arau. One day, the state of California wakes up and one third of the population, to their surprise, are latinos.

The movie deals with many contemporary issues dealing with race, such as the fact that not all latinos are Mexicans, and that migrant workers contribute greatly to the state of California.

This underlying message of this film suggests that for something to be visible, it’s got to be invisible.  I hope you pick up this film and “catch u on another one.  I be outs.”

Music in my Life

By Amelia Torres

Music is a big part of life; not just my life, but everyone’s.   I mean, who does not like music?  My life would be nothing without music. I listen to it all the time.  If I didn’t, it would be really weird; like everything would just be so boring, without color.  Everyone has his or her own type of music, and there are so many songs people can choose from.  There’s pop music, rap, alternative, rock, hard rock, classic, hip hop, country, classical, oldies – there’s just so much.  You can even make up your own.

Personally, my favorite would have to be Reggeaton, like Daddy Yankee, Don Omar, Wisin y Yandel, and many more.  Another type of music I really like is Duranguese. Reggeaton is usually single artists while Duranguese is more groups like, K-Paz de la Sierra, Montez de Durango, Horocopos, and more.  This is music that the Latino culture listens to.  You know, I’m not sure what other people listen to, but yeah, I really like these types of music.

Music has been around since forever.  There was even music when Jesus walked the earth.  The music from back then was probably very different from what we listen to today.  They had different instruments, and sang holy words.  They praised the lord in their songs, and we still do this day.  Music has changed a lot as the years have passed, and it will keep changing in the years to come.
