Our Friend Cec

By Audrey Spurgeon

Some of the most important but least acknowledged people in our school are the support staff.  They are our paraprofessionals, secretaries, and janitorial staff.  These people are the grease that keeps the ALC machine running.

One person that I would like everyone to know about is Cec Burchill.  She is the ALC secretary.  Cec is the first person we see in the morning, the last one we see on the way out, and she always has a smile for us.  She brings us in treats and has four boom boxes that she lets us borrow.

Cec was born in Wabasso, Minnesota, near Redwood Falls. She has lived in either Sioux Falls or Worthington most of her life. Cec currently lives on Lake Okabena and works at the secretary at the Worthingon ALC.

A few of Cec’s likes are going for walks with her husband and new puppy, swimming, and loves being active in the community and her church. I think Cec loves everything except exercising and onions. Her favorite weekend activities are decorating her house and working outside, but she also cleans, sleeps, washes clothes, and spends time with her hubby and friends.

Cec Burchill -- everybody’s favorite secretary

Cec’s favorite color is yellow because it is bright and cheery.  Yellow reminds her of happiness and the warmth of the sun. Her favorite food is Asian egg rolls (especially homemade ones hint…hint) and pizza.  “Pizza is so good but so bad for you.   Hey we all need a little bad stuff in our life.”

Cec has had an interesting job history.  Her first jobs were corn detasseling corn and babysitting.  She worked with insurance and annuities at the Catholic Aid Association.  Cec worked for eight years at the South Dakota School for the Deaf.   Of course her favorite job she ever had is here at the ALC.  Her absolute favorite part of working at the ALC is the kids. She believes we all have great potential. Cec enjoys doing secretary work, and has a really great boss!

(Story Continued from page 1)

Cec has four sisters!  Bernie and Kathy live in California, and Audrey and Mary live in South Dakota.  If you think four siblings are a lot then you will be shocked to find out that she also has four brothers.  Nick and Gunner lives in San Francisco, Coke lives in Las Vegas, and Eugene lives in Redwood falls.

Cec has two sons.   Jayson, a thirty-five year old freelance photographer, lives in Minneapolis with his German wife.  Michael, a thirty-three year old contractor and ski instructor, lives in Jackson, Wyoming.  Michael is not married, but he is good looking, and is an all-around American guy that is a kid at heart.

Cec’s wonderful husband Connie was president of Worthington Community College (now Minnesota West) for many years.  Connie is now retired.  Three years ago he suffered a stroke and now stays home and manages the house and yard.

Cec is a wonderful person and is very greatly appreciated by the staff and students at the ALC.  When you get a chance stop by and tell her thank you.

Koller is ISD 518

Teacher of the Year

By Raul Avila

We at the ALC congratulate Mr. Koller for winning Teacher of the Year. He is a math teacher at Worthington High School.

He has written four math books used all across country. He is a well-educated person, also very energetic when it comes to math.  This makes you can sit up and listen to what he has to say. He is also an awesome guy who loves his job and loves what he does. He is one teacher who I know that cares about his students.

In Mr. Koller’s class it’s like his house.  He has a set of rules and you have to obey them.   Mr. Koller used to always tell me “If you want to learn and pass my class you have to sit up, and look straight at me while I am teaching.” You can’t fall asleep in there.  If your head goes down, then you have to go to the office.

Personally I think he deserves this award because I know he has been working hard and is a brilliant teacher to have around. I know that you can learn a lot more in his class than just math.  He teaches you a lot of other things, too.

May 5th is Multicultural Day at the ALC

By David Dawson

Cinco de Mayo (May 5) is not Mexico’s Independence Day but is still a celebration of Mexican Independence.  It is the day 4,000 Mexican Soldiers led by Benito Juarez took out 8,000 invading French Soldiers at Puebla, Mexico, in the year 1862.  That is why the celebration takes place that day.

Also on that day the ALC plans to celebrate Multicultural Day. On Friday May 5, 2006, the ALC will have guest speakers from different cultures, all kinds of ethnic foods in our very own cafeteria, and plenty of activities from cultures around the world.

One of the more unusual activities consist of a Laotian Game called Thae-thau.  It uses a bamboo ball and is played sort of like volleyball except that you kick the ball instead of using your hands!      (Continued à)

Mr.Knapp had this to say:  “Hopefully the day will be educational and fun.  We want to take time to celebrate our differences and our commonalities as individuals and cultures.  We are all important in America, and we are all Americans.  Each of us have something great to contribute, especially to our ALC family and school.  Mrs. Lowe and her students are organizing an egg roll sale, too.  Free will donations will be accepted, too.  We hope to raise some more money for Kyle's family.  One things that will happen next Friday is that everyone will have the opportunity to put their handprint on the wall in the gym in recognition of the theme for the day...'We are one...We are many..We are together,' and that is good.."

Parents and families are invited for dinner and movies. Basically, May 5 will be a day to slack off  (by that I mean relax)  and enjoy. So be excited and be there…

It’s time for Ozzfest…        By David Dawson

Immigration and History…

By Idania Lopez

Immigration is a very hot topic.  Reading the newspaper these days, one would think that everyone is afraid of immigrants. Has it always been that way?  Isn’t America, after all, the land of immigrants?

150 years ago it was pretty much the same.   But back then, it was the Irish everyone was alarmed about.  A political movement was born in the 1850s to oppose the great wave of immigrants then entering the United States.  Members of this movement claimed that immigrants — especially Irish Catholics —threatened to destroy America.

This movement claimed that the Roman Catholic Church was controlled by a foreign prince (the pope) who could exert political control over a large group of people.  The fear was that the Pope might actually gain political power in America!

Those opposed to immigration of Irish Catholics into the United States formed a secret political party known as the Order of United Americans.  Whenever anyone asked them about their party, members were supposed to say, "I know nothing." For this reason, they became known as the "Know-Nothings", though they called themselves The American Party.

During the election of 1856, bigotry against Catholics became so intense that Abraham Lincoln wrote, "If the Know-Nothings get control, the Declaration of Independence will read: All men are created equal except for Negroes, foreigners and Catholics."

 (Continued à)

Cartoonist’s depiction of Irish immigrants in 1867

Among other things, the platform of the Know-Nothing Party called for:

  • Severe limits on immigrants, especially from Catholic countries.
  • Restricting political offices to U.S.-born Americans.
  • A 25 year waiting period before an immigrant could gain citizenship.
  • Banning all Catholics from employment as public school teachers.

The Know-Nothing movement eventually faded.  Irish Catholics no longer seemed a threat.  Theses days it seems that Latin Americans have replaced Irish Catholics in the “minds” of our modern know nothings.

Hot Imports

By Steve Lo

Everyone has a favorite car.  But for many  car maniacs, imported cars are the hottest thing going.  The style, the quickness, the acceleration of  import cars is incredible.  The most common brands out there are Honda Products.

Here are some basic functions and tips about the lovely 1996 Honda Civic EX.   Honda Motor Company always found a way to utilize the same or similar engines in many of the company's vehicles. The D16Z found in the 1996 Civic EX was first used in the 1992 Civic SI hatchback.

Although the 1996-up D16Z engine went through some updates (intake manifold, cam design and combustion chamber volume), the engine is the same as the one found four years prior. The D16Z engine survived a 9-year production run, ending with the 2000 Civic EX. As many of us already know, the D16Z engine is a 1.6-liter SOHC VTEC powerplant that is factory-rated with 125 hp at the flywheel.

(Continued à)

The unfortunate downside of the Civic's popularity is the large number of the rides like yours. However, one of the best ways to make your Civic stand out is the addition of a good set of kicks, (wheels that is).

Our plain-Jane Civic was spruced up into a nasty Nicki with Tenzo Mean-6 aluminums and Falken gumballs. The 17-inch Tenzos turned the Honda into a real head-turner cruising the boulevard.

The Civic's handling ability was also increased due to the extra grippy Falken FK-451. Now quick turns are a breeze, even at breakneck speeds. With the look and handling down pat, it was now time for some power infusion.

Also to kick up your car is to swap engines.  To replace an engine for a better one is to know what engines can fit in this civic.  The replacements can be: B16A, B18, A/B/C, H23, and H22A.
