Minilik’s Biography

By Nery Perez

I was assigned to interview Minilik Mersha.  He had a very interesting story to tell me about his life. He comes from Africa.  To be exact, he comes from Ethiopia. He came to the United States of America around nine, or ten months ago. He flew here with his parents. The flight was two days on the plane!

He came to the states knowing a little bit of English because he went to school in Ethiopia and took English classes.

There are varieties of music Minilik likes to listen to. These are rap, tribal music, hip-hop, and some country.

In his spare time Minilik likes hanging out with friends and playing soccer with them. When they are not playing soccer they are playing video games. He has three friends who he trusts. Their names are Tek, Dee and Mike. They all come from Ethiopia.

He likes to eat fast food. His favorite food in the U.S. is hamburgers with fries, and they have to be from McDonald’s. His favorite food of all time is something that they make in Africa. He told me that it tastes very good and that his mom makes it.

Back in Africa he believed in God and he told me this has not changed at all. Now that he lives in the U.S. he still believes in God because God helped him out on the way here. He made it here safely due to his faith in God.

Minilik has a brother and a sister. They both live with him in an apartment here in town. Minilik also lives with his parents.

One of his proudest moments was when he made it to the United States. His scariest moment was when he got on to the plane to come to the U.S.  Now that he is here he is happy and free.

ALC Student Council meets for first time

The members of this year’s ALC Student Council are Sing, Ryan, Esmeralda, Shanna, Nery, Miguel, Reuben, Leticia, Jennie and Desiree.  They were chosen in an election held during a student meeting a week-an-a-half ago.

The very first Student Council Meeting was held on Friday.  They met at the end of the day for the last 30 minutes.

The Council met with Mr. Knapp and discussed what their role would be. The main agenda of the meeting was to brainstorm about what the council might accomplish during the coming year.  The students discussed various ideas about projects, student field trips, and so on.

First ALC Student Council meeting of the year

The only decision made during Friday’s meeting was that future meetings should take place weekly.  The council decided to meet every Friday for 30 minutes.

Council members were also in agreement that there should be an ALC Prom this year and that planning for it should begin as soon as possible.  However, planning for Prom will be conducted at future meetings.

The Insider will keep you updated about future Student Council meetings.

ALC Mythbusters

What’s the deal with Whiskey Ditch?

The ALC sits next to a small stream known as “Whiskey Ditch.”  What is the deal with this name, anyway?

The Myth:  The story goes like this: Whiskey Ditch was given its name back during prohibition (when booze was illegal).  According to the legend, Worthington bootleggers (people who made illegal booze) operated in the area of the ditch and kept their illegal whiskey hidden there.  Prohibition lasted from 1919 until 1933.

The reality:  In reality, the name “Whiskey Ditch” was given to the ditch when it was dug in the 1890's. It became known by this name because the project was financed by a "whiskey tax" or a tax on liquor sold in Worthington .

Before the existence of the ditch, the rain runoff that ran towards Worthington from north of town would flow in the creek that now runs by the football field.  This creek eventually flows into Heron Lake.

In the late 1800's, there was a drought, and the level of Lake Okabena was very low.  People in Worthington wanted the water flowing into Heron Lake to go into Lake Okabena instead.

The ditch digging project was accomplished by many men using hand shovels. They dug through a large hill where present-day Oxford Street crosses the present ditch.

The new ditch allowed rain runoff from north of town to flow into Lake Okabena. Lake Okabena levels rose, and everyone in town was happy, although we have no idea how the people in Heron Lake felt.

In any event, the myth of Whiskey Ditch and the bootleggers is busted….

Worthington kicks it in soccer…

The Worthington Trojan boys’ soccer team kicked the daylights out of Madelia-Truman last week in a non-conference game.  Worthington won the home match after scoring eight goals, compared to two for Madelia-Truman.

The Trojans won another match on Saturday, defeating Mankato-Loyola 1-0.  The victory over Mankato-Loyola was the Trojans’ last regular game of the season.

Worthington finished its season with a 5-0-1 record as they move into the Section 2A playoffs.  Those playoffs get underway today (October 11).

Exploits of the Trojan boys’ soccer team are followed closely at the Worthington ALC.  This is because ALC students Nery Perez and Michael Jimenez are part of the team.

Everyone at the ALC wishes the Trojans the best as they begin their Section 2A playoffs this afternoon.

Worthington Trojans win homecoming game

The Worthington Trojans soundly defeated the Waseca Bluejays 34-0 in last  Friday’s homecoming game.

Zach Traphagen scored the first touchdown after catching a pass fired by Trojan quarterback Chris Aggen.  Junior tailback Nate Stoll carried the ball forward for the next two touchdowns.  Stoll carried the ball 16 times for a total gain of 152 yards.  Another pass by Aggen was snagged by Andrew Berg for touchdown number four.   The fifth touchdown was scored by Chad Vaske when he made an 85 yard kickoff return.

The Trojans easily won their homecoming

game against the Bluejays

The Trojans were in  top form.  The Bluejays, by contrast, were completely shut out for the night.  They hardly moved the ball forward at all.

Sergio

Careless, nice to some, weird, and funny

Brother to Frank and Ryan and actual brother Brandon

Lover of Mad Monkey Love and Music to make love to

Who feels insignificant to some

Who needs to write everyday

Who fears spiders and life after death

Who would like to see me naked

Resident of my own world

Chaparro

Tiza Rima poem

I thought I was in love once, but I was wrong

Being with my boyfriend changed my whole life

It was like a weird, crazy, fast song

My life was so confusing, it was a mess

When it wasn’t my fault, I still said “sorry”

It took a toll on me, my life was full of stress

I can’t believe I was sixteen and engaged

He changed me so much and I didn’t notice

A lot of the time I felt like I had aged

I finally did the thing that was smart

And my life is happy for the most part

Stupid Laws in the State of Iowa

Compiled by Desiree Briskee

  • Tanning bed facilities must warn of the risk of getting sunburned.
  • A board was created to regulate hearing aids. It includes appointees who are supposed to represent the general public.
  • Ministers must obtain a permit to carry liquor across state lines.
  • Doctors who treat people with gonorrhea must report this to the local board of health stating the disease's "probable origin".
  • All boxes used to pick hops must be precisely 36 inches in length.
  • It’s against the law to sell or distribute illicit drugs or narcotics without having first obtained the appropriate Iowa drug tax stamp.
  • A man with a moustache cannot legally kiss a woman in public.
  • Any one-armed piano players working in the state must perform for free.
