Monday is Martin Luther King Day

By Kayla Vega

Monday is a day off from school because it’s Martin Luther King Day.  All of you know who Martin Luther King was, right? He was born on January 15, 1929, in Atlanta, Georgia.  During his lifetime, he became the youngest person to ever win the Nobel Peace Prize.  He died on April 4, 1968, in Memphis, Tennessee.

He was pretty smart, actually. He skipped 9-12th grade. Why? Because he was smart enough to go straight to college.  He began attending Morehouse College when he was 15 years old!  He was that smart.

In 1953 he became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.  On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat to a white person, and King began the Montgomery Bus Boycott.  The boycott forced Montgomery to change its rules about riding the bus.

King later became famous after giving his “I Have a Dream” speech at the March on Washington on August 28, 1963.

Take a moment on Monday to think about why you have the day off from school…

Martin Luther King was all about blacks being treated equally by the white folks. His speeches and actions inspired people throughout America – even throughout the world. Even now, people still remember him.

Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968, while lending support to a sanitation workers’ strike. He was shot by James Earl Ray around 7:05 pm while standing on his balcony at the Lorraine Motel.  Sadly, he died about an hour later.

My opinion is that if it wasn’t for Martin Luther King people wouldn’t have changed their ways. Blacks would still be treated badly. There is still a lot of racism in this world, of course, but it’s getting better every day, thanks in large part to Martin Luther King.

Focus on Staff:

Mrs. Lowe

By Martin Lopez and Jeanette Aguilar

As we all know, Mrs. Lowe is the special education teacher here at the ALC.  She is also the youth director at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

We asked Mrs. Lowe what some of her likes are.  She said:  She loves pigs (she was raised on a farm), antiques (old stuff, you know), and geneology (“digging up good family dirt”). She also enjoys spending time with her family.

Mrs. Lowe’s dislikes include when younger adult brothers are being jerks, and when her husband tries to have a conversation when she is busy.  She also dislikes it when people do not follow through on their commitments.

Her favorite color is Navy blue. She doesn’t know why, she just likes it. Her favorite food is plain salty potato chips.  She also loves ice cold milk (and it’s got to be cold).

In Mrs. Lowe’s family there are two daughters, Jacie of 8 years, and Jorgia Suzanne of 2 years. Her husband’s name is Buster.

Mrs Lowe is actually the daughter of former high school shop teacher Mr. Solt.  She herself is the oldest of 5 children. She was 24 years old when her youngest brother was born.

Mrs. Lowe is a licensed Agriculture teacher (she likes pigs, remember?).  She is in the process of earning her special-ed license through further education and on-the-job experience.

Mrs. Lowe’s first name is Jerusha.  For that reason, Mr. Knapp calls her J.Lo (J. Lowe, get it).  But it might also be due to the fact that she looks so much like J.Lo, AKA Jennifer Lopez.  She also dances very much like J.Lo.  Just watch last year’s prom video if you don’t believe us.

Superbowl Picks

     Chicago Bears

 By David Miranda

Most people don’t believe that the Chicago Bears can take it to the house this year.  Not me.  I think they can take it all this year.  Many experts don’t agree and think the Bears have no chance of reaching Super Bowl XLI.

Famed sportscaster John Madden isn’t among them. Madden believes that the Bears have the best chance to take it all this year. They have the best record and they have been the best team in the NFC all year.

Madden believes that if the Bears follow the formula that’s given them the home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, they’ll be difficult to beat in the post-season.

“What they have to do is just play like they usually do on defense, take the ball away and don’t give it away,” Madden said.  “I think that going from Grossman to Griese would be going backwards, and I say that with all due respect to Brian Griese.”

“I don’t mean that as a negative for him. But when you’ve got the young guy starting,” Madden added, “you want a young quarterback who’s your future.”

Madden doesn’t hide the fact that as a sportscaster, he like the Bears.  He maintains to this day that the 1985 Bears were his favorite team to cover.

“The Bears are good for the NFL and when they’re good it’s a good year. I’m not saying that now because they have the best record in the NFC.  I said that three years ago, five years ago and 10 years ago. I’ve always felt that.”

Quarterback Rex Grossman is having

one terrific year…

Advice to the guys…

Saying it nicely…

By Samantha Loza

It’s a pity, but too many men have no idea how to talk to a woman today.  They just don’t know how to say things nicely.  I mean, is being nice a lost art or something?  Men today just don’t know how to put a positive spin on things.

For instance, why would a man tell a woman she is a bad cook when he could just as easily say she is microwave compatible?  Think about it… there’s a nice way to say everything.

Why would a considerate man tell a woman she wears too much perfume, when he could instead say she commits fragrance abuse?  Or tell her she wears too much jewelry when he could just as easily say she is metallically overburdened?  Women never wear too much makeup.  No. they have merely reached a point of cosmetic saturation.

Get it straight, guys.  Women are never too heavy – they have simply achieved maximum density.  Nor can a woman be too skinny – she is simply skeletally prominent.  And remember, guys, women never have mustaches – they are simply in touch with their masculine side.

(Continued à)

Women are never flirts or teases

though a few have engaged in artificial stimulation.  And no women should ever be called an air head, though some are admittedly reality challenged.  And no decent man would ever say a woman has been around, when he could just as easily say she has previously enjoyed company.  Come on guys, let’s be nice.

Women don’t hate televised sports, they are athletically myopic.  And they never nag you; they are merely being verbally repetitive.  Women are never conceited, though some are intimately aware of their own best qualities.  And women never do too much shopping, though many are acutely mall fluent.

It’s all about how you say things, guys.  With that said, I’ll leave you with this final thought: Someday you may want the woman you love to marry you, but she would much rather lock you into a state of domestic incarceration.
