What does Valentine’s Day mean to you?

By Tasha Brissom

St Valentine’s Day is on February 14th. It is traditionally a day about lovers showing how much they love each other by sending cards, flowers, or giving boxes of chocolate. Some people like to send anonymous love notes to each other on this joyous holiday. Here are my thoughts about Valentine’s Day.

What do I want for Valentine’s Day? I think it would be nice to get some flowers. I don’t think it would be bad to get some love notes. It would also be nice to be taken out to dinner at a nice restaurant, but it’s not like that’s going to happen. So I’ll just take it as it comes…

Mr. Hyvari hates Valentine’s Day. He thinks it’s a retail sport created by the flower and diamond industries and would never buy the over-priced flowers for women.

Paula says it’s just another day in February. She says your significant other should be treated special all year, not just on that one day.

Cec thinks that the holiday is overrated, but she likes receiving flowers and candy.

Mr. Lowry said it gives people a reason to send cards and flowers. It also reminds men they have to be sweet to their women once in a while.

Mrs. Schreiber expressed that it was a great holiday. She also states that it’s a nice way to show someone you care.

Mrs. Lowe has a very negative opinion about Valentine’s Day.  She says she hates the holiday and that its lame.

Mrs. Mosher’s take on Valentine’s Day is that she likes the holiday and that she and her husband usually go out to eat.

Mr. Knapp loves Valentine’s Day. He talked about how he remembered receiving Valentines as a kid.

Mr. Strouth likes Valentine’s Day. He says that he doesn’t think it’s a big deal but he doesn’t have any problems with it.

Barb loves Valentine’s Day, but she thinks it should be 365 days of the year.

St. Valentine's Day Massacre

By Natasha Davis

On February 14, 1929 seven men dressed in suits and ties were found shot full of bullets inside the Cartage Co. garage in North Chicago. They had been lined up against the wall, and shot from behind execution-style. These men were gangsters working for notorious bootlegger "Bugs" Moran, and we remember this incident as the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.

Back in the day when alcohol was illegal, there was bloody competition between gangster rivals Al "Scarface" Capone and George "Bugs" Moran.   Shootouts were commonplace events.  However, police investigating the Valentine's Day Massacre were puzzled. The victims were killers with a huge supply of weapons at their fingertips.   Why would they turn their backs to the wall instead of putting up a fight?

An eyewitness gave police the answer.   She saw two uniformed policemen exit the garage while escorting two plain-clothed men who held their hands up in the air.  It appeared to her that police had raided the place and the men were under arrest. However, the Chicago police had not sent any officers to that address.

Bodies of St. Valentine’s Day Massacre victims being removed from the Cartage Co. Garage

Police realized that rival gangsters had dressed up as cops and made a fake raid on Bugs Moran’s operation.  Al Capone was the only suspect of this brutal crime, but he claimed to have been in Florida at the time.

When the bodies were discovered, police thought they were all dead. However, one investigator found gangster Frank Gusenberg lying among the corpses.  Police feared that he would die before they had a chance to question him.  Gusenberg briefly regained consciousness, but when he was asked who did the deed, he simply stated "I'm not gonna talk.”  Then he laid his head down and died.

Police concluded that the two men dressed as cops had entered the garage.  They acted as if they were police on an investigation, so the Moran gang cooperated with requests to line up against the wall.  They automatically assumed that they were policemen on a routine sting. They thought they would be searched and perhaps arrested – nothing more.

The killers drove away and no one in the neighborhood bothered to call the police.  Why would they have?  They had just seen the police there – or so they thought.

Happy Valentines Day

By Kayla Vega

“What is Valentine’s Day?” them wierdos say. How does anybody not know what Valentine’s Day is? Well I guess I got enough time to explain to you guys what it is… Valentine’s Day is basically the day of Love or something. You know what I’m saying or what?

Here are some tips for the guys:  Buy something sweet like flowers, chocolates, and if you want, a card, oh yeah and you can’t forget the teddy bear.  Then maybe you can buy some balloons too!!!

You then give it to your girlfriend or maybe even the girl that you like. Your girl will like that a lot. That’s not the only thing you can do for a girl, but that’s like the usual, you know?

Need some other ideas?  Take her out to eat. Better yet, make her food (you know, like cook it) and eat at your house. Be creative. Make up our own crazy idea… that’s sweeter. There are many possibilites.

Tips for the girls:  If you really think about it, it’s not really that cheap to get something for a guy on Valentine’s Day.  For a sensitive guy, telling him how much you love and appreciate him in your own spoken words or even in writing, will make him happy. Buy a watch, a card, some PJ’s  Honestly, I think it’s hard to find a guy the perfect gift for Valentine’s Day. Girls, we got many crazy ideas in our minds.  Bring them out to your man.

You don’t necessarily have to waste money on a gift, you know. Just tell him you love him and that should be good enough. It’s not about buying gift.  I know everybody likes gifts but hey, Christmas has already passed people!!! Just spend the day with someone you love on Valentine’s Day.

Goods and Bads about V-Day

By Rosa Hurtado

February 14. Yeah it’s coming up and you know what they celebrate on February 14 -- its V-day and that means that February 14 is all about valentines. It is the day of love and friendship. There are people who like it and yeah there are people who don’t like it.

People who like Valentine’s Day are people that say “Oh I’m in love” and have a boyfriend or girlfriend. Yeah, these people like it because they are expecting something from their loved one and if they have been together for quiet a while they expect something good because yeah they have been together for a while.

People who don’t like it are people who don’t have a boyfriend or a girlfriend. They are the ones who don’t have someone to celebrate that special day with and won’t be getting a surprise (present) that day. People who don’t like it are those who don’t have someone to share that special day with.

But its okay because there are always people who like and dislike special occasions.
