9/11 2001:

A moment in history

By Raul Avilla

It was exactly five years ago today that the 9/11 attacks occurred. Do you remember were you were at the time this was happening?

I remember very well.  I was in Texas with my mom and we had just finish dropping my brother and sister off at school and had picked up some breakfast on the way. We got home, started flipping through channels and there it was –  the second plane hit the tower and within the hour they went down.

We talked to a couple people in the ALC and they all remembered where they were at, too.   Mr. Knapp said he was donating blood in a blood bank truck.  They turned on the TV and he saw the towers fall while blood was draining out of a tube in his arm!

Mr. Lowry was in class at Worthington High School when a student returned from a band lesson and announced that two planes hit the twin towers and that one tower had already collapsed. Lowry told him sit down quit spreading rumors.  He then gave the class a lecture on how rumors begin and spread.

Where were you on 9/11 2001?

Lowry stopped at home on his way to the ALC and he and his wife saw the second tower drop on TV.  It was no rumor!

Mr. Hyvari said he was at Minnesota West in Economics class when the towers collapsed. Paula said she was working at Community First Bank. Cec was in Minneapolis attending Real Estate Broker’s School.

Where were you when the towers fell?  9/11 will always be a defining event in our lives.  Most of us will remember precisely where we were forever.

What’s up with Turkey Day?

By Manuel Garcia

Turkey Day, a Worthington tradition, takes place every year in the city of Worthington. It was created in 1939 by Mr. E.O. Olson, owner of a poultry processing plant.  This plant eventually became the old Campbell’s Soup building in Worthington.

The first Turkey Day was held in 1939.  In 1940 Minnesota Governor Harold Stassen attended the festival, and it got reported in Life Magazine and on newsreels. (See this in the video below.)

(Continued à)

Worthington was not the only town that celebrated a festival like Turkey Day.  In Cuero, Texas, they had a similar festival.  In fact, that is where E. O. Olson got the idea for Worthington’s Turkey Day.

In 1972, people in Worthington rediscovered existance of Cuero’s Turkey Day.  Ever since then, both towns have held turkey races on their respective Turkey Days between Worthington’s turkey “Paycheck” and Cuero’s turkey “Ruby Begonia”.

When Turkey Day comes around there all sorts of events.  These include a pancake breakfast, a Turkey Day Parade, the Turkey Trot race around the lake, the medallion hunt, and, of course, the race between Paycheck and Ruby Begonia.  So be there this Saturday and enjoy Turkey Day #65!

What I did on my summer vacation…

Summer ended fast.   I’m currently working for Dollar General.  I started with set-up, meaning I helped open the store. Dollar General kept me on as a permanent employee and offered me a position as a Sales Associate.  Adrian Martinez

My sister Sharon had a baby boy on June 4, 2006, at the Worthington Regional Hospital. She named her son Dwayne. Right now he is 3 months. He is small and looks like his dad.   Amy Syhavong

This summer I worked for about 2 months picking rock on farms, which was good because I got eight dollars an hour and worked seven to eight hour days.  I also mowed lawns and got ten bucks every time I did that.

Cody Henderson

I mostly went out and had fun. I hung out with my friends, drove around and enjoyed the weather.  I also spent time with my sister Bounmy. Her little boy just turned 2 and she’s pregnant with her second baby.    Dee Tonsay

This summer I went to Mexico right away when school was over and I stayed there for two months.  It was a lot of fun because my cousins graduated from high school and there were a lot of parties to attend.

Joan Vasquez

In July I traveled to Guatemala.  I came back in August.  My parents are from Guatemala.  I visited my family and went to a festival in the town called La Feria de Tacana.  I also went to the Mayan pyramids at TikalJuan Perez

The day after school ended I jumped on a plane with my mom and my sister.  We flew from Omaha, Nebraska, to Chicago, Illinois. Then from Chicago we flew to
Mexico City!  David McCloskey

Right after school ended I went to visit my cousin in Alexandra. I stayed there for one week. My cousin showed me the lakes and the big houses that they have over there. But my visit was boring, because there were hardly any Asian people there.  Sing Phady

I worked a lot.  I worked at the Long Branch and at Michael’s at the end of the summer.  I also got into a car accident.  We hit a tree and I hit my head on the windshield.   I still have a bump from it! Tyler Dorschner
