The 2006 King Turkey Day parade

Story and pictures by Priscilla Garcia

For those who made it to this year’s King Turkey Day parade, you already know that there was a disappointing loss for our home town turkey, Paycheck. The reason: He made a pit stop to talk to some kids on the corner of Tenth Street and Third Ave. Although Ruby made it to the finish line first, there was a five second touch penalty. The final results for the turkey race: Paycheck came in at 2 minutes 14.3 seconds (0 penalties). Ruby came in with the win at 1 minute 5 seconds (1 penalty).

We all expected rain for this special day, but to everyone’s surprise it was very sunny and hot.  All in all it turned out to be a pretty good day for a parade.

The events this year were bigger, I thought, than my previous eleven years in Worthington. There were the traditional events like the Turkey Day Medallion Hunt, the pancake feed, the mayor’s brunch, the pony rides, train express ride, of course the Great Gobbler Gallop, and many others. Then there were some new events this year like the carnival rides, and the turtle races.

Paycheck lost  the Great Gobbler Gallop…

The food vendors were great! There was a lot of diverse food to choose from. It goes well with our now very multicultural town. I saw most of the bands and it’s kind of hard to say which band was better. They were all great but I liked the Trojan Band best.

I ran into quite a few ALC students and faculty who were enjoying the day with friends and family. Most said they had a good time. I managed to take pictures of them and get some feedback on what they liked or disliked about Turkey Day.  Other than the slight sunburn I received, my son and I enjoyed every event. My son woke up Monday morning asking if we were going to Turkey Day again!

Although I’m proud to live in the U.S., I can’t forget that I happen to be Mexican.  So I have to point out that this year’s Turkey Day (September 16) was also Mexico’s Independence Day! So for all you Mexicans out there happy Independence Day! For everyone else, happy Turkey Day!

Faces in the Crowd…

Everyone had a great time at Turkey Day.  Everyone, that is, except David.  His comment was “It’s boring today.”

We caught up with Agustin walking with his friends.  He apparently was having such a great time that he didn’t even want to stop and make a comment….

Mrs. Moser attended Turkey Day with her daughter Kedrin.  Mrs. Moser said that “She (Kedrin) is here to see the bands.  As for me, it’s great.  I love parades.”

Sonny and Jesse were caught on the corner enjoying the parade.  They said they weren’t there for the parade, but we know better…

We found Sandra in the crowd enjoying the festivities with her brother, sister, mom and step-dad.  “It’s fun here and it’s cool,” she had to say.

Mr. Lowry and his daughters just finished watching the Great Gobbler Gallop when we caught up with them.  “It’s great,” said Mr. Lowry.  “We’re having a fun time.”

More faces in the crowd…

The Iversons made a family day out of Turkey Day.  They were captured on Main Street as they pushed the little ones in their strollers.  “The kids like the music and the bands,” they said.

Stephanie enjoyed the Turkey Day festivities along with friends James and Micaela.  When asked what she thought of the day, Stephanie said “It was cool.”  James said he just “had a great time being around the girls.”

Snooks, Connie and Cec grabbed a quick bite to eat on Third Avenue, saying “This is a great day.  Lots of people, lots of fun, and great food.”

Sylvia and Danny relaxed along the parade route along with friend Alberto.  They were “just waiting for the parade,” or so they said.

Mrs. Lowe and Jorgia waited on Main Street  for the parade to begin.   “We did the pancake feed this morning,” said Mrs. Lowe.  “We hope to do some rides and eat some greasy food, later.”

Mrs. Schrieber, our science teacher

By Audrey Spurgeon

Mrs.Schrieber’s likes are cooking, spending time with her kids, photography and also fishing. Her dislikes are pickles, long winters and no color blase

Her favorite color is royal blue because it is calming and vibrant. Her favorite food is egg rolls and fried rice because it is something different. In her spare time she likes to read and spend time outside.  On the weekends she likes to catch up on what wasn’t done during the week and work at remodeling her house.

She has three sisters and three brothers.  Ellen , 63, is married and lives in Florida and has three grown girls. Judy, 58, lives in Missouri and also has three grown children. Bev, 54,  lives in Iowa and has 2 grown kids. David, 61, is married and lives in Missouri.  He also has three grown kids. Dwayne, 56, is widowed and lives in Jackson.  He has two grown sons. Jeff, 49, is married and lives in Kentucky with his two young children.

She has three kids.  Ryan is 23, engaged, and lives in Lakefield. Amy, 21, lives in Wisconsin with baby and boyfriend. Stack is 16, lives at home, and attends Worthington High School.

Mrs. Schrieber has had many jobs over the years.  She has been a Cook, a YMCA worker, Wee Care Daycare provider, worked for the Daily globe, Hy-Vee, and finally, the ALC.

Teaching is her favorite job because she can make more of an impact on people.  She feels she can accomplish something important in the teaching profession. What attracted her to the ALC was a chance to work within the same district where her kids attended school.  Mrs. Schrieber enjoys working at the ALC because teachers are more independent here and also because it has a more relaxed atmosphere.

She was born in Moberly, Missouri. She has lived most her life in Jackson and in Worthington. She went to school at Jackson Elementary and Jackson High School. She went to collage at Southwest State in Marshall.

Mrs. Schrieber is a great teacher and a friend to most of us.  She’s kind of like a school mom and I hope you enjoy these interesting facts about her and her family.

You might live in Worthington if…

·         Your Turkey Day occurs in September, not in November.

·         Your town’s biggest holiday is a day in remembrance of the slaughtering of turkeys.

·         You know who won the big race…Paycheck or Ruby.

·         You knew where the medallion was but you were beat to it by some kid.

·         You’ve ever won a prize because of your KTD Button.

·         You are an outcast if you do not have a Turkey Button pasted to your chest.

·         There is an unofficial high school reunion held every year at the Long Branch Saloon.

·         You know the distance around Lake Okabena in Kilometers (10k)

·         Your mall has only one store... JC Penny’s.

·         The smell of your town depends greatly upon wind direction.

·         The most scenic river in town is affectionately known as “Whiskey Ditch.”

·         It’s impossible to tell the difference between your local DARE officer and his pet dog.

·         You place an order at a local fast food joint in English and you need a translator.

 Turkey Day

Q:  Why did they let Paycheck join the band? A:  Because he had the drumsticks

Q:  Why did Officer Fritz arrest the turkey?  A:  He suspected the turkey of fowl play.

Q:  Why did the turkey cross the road?   A:  It was the chicken's day off.

Q:  How do you make a turkey float in Lake Okabena?  A:  Go out into the middle of the lake in a boat, get two scoops of ice cream,
add some root beer, then stuff a turkey into the glass.

Q:  Why was the turkey sent to Mr. Knapp’s office?  A:  He used fowl language in class!

Q. Why do turkeys go “gobble, gobble”? A. Because they never learned good table manners

Q. What always comes at the end of Turkey Day? A. The letter y.

A turkey farmer’s family was always fighting over who would get the drumstick of the turkey at dinnertime.  The farmer decided to breed a turkey that had more than two legs.  "Well,” he said, “I succeeded! I bred a turkey that has six legs!" His family asked how it tasted.  "I don't know" said the farmer. "I never could catch the darn thing!"
