                Power Point Projects

 By Raul Avila

In Mr. Hyvari’s class we have been working on Powerpoint presentations. I was the first one done in the class. I also needed to write a story for the newspaper class, so this story is about how we made our Powerpoint presentations.

Mr. Hyvari’s gave us an assignment to do a slide show about us personally. With this type of assignment we all learned something about everyone in class.  Everyone had to present a slide show about their life and what has happened to them.

The assignment had various topics that had to be covered such as our personal backgrounds, strengths, weaknesses, activities, goals, what we do in the summertime, what’s going on in world history, and also our final thoughts. All of these topics are part of our daily lives.

Check out our class powerpoints on the internet…

Mr. Hyvari talked us through putting the slide show together and helped us collect and scan photos to use.  He showed us how to include titles and other fancy effects.  We then viewed one another’s presentations on the new “Smartboard” in the ALC computer lab.

Mr. Lowry helped out by putting the shows that have been finished onto the internet.  That way, people anywhere can see them.

If you click on the picture of the camera below, you will be able to connect to our Powerpoint presentations.  Also included on the page are some student webpages that students (and former students) made for Mr. Lowry last year.  Hope you enjoy them…

WHS Soccer on a winning season

By Joan Vasquez and Jose Sanchez

Look out for the Worthington High School soccer team!  They are almost unstoppable.  This is the best year in at least the last four years.  This year the W.H.S. team currently has a winning record of 10-2-1.  Last week we broke our record for the most wins ever!  Previously the most wins we have ever had were eight in a whole season.   So not only have we beaten the record, we did it in only half a season.  Just wait for the second half!

This year we have elite players in every position.   We have Crystian Munoz-Rios as a forward and he’s one of the best players on our team.  We have Nery Perez, Erick Arauz, and Max Pierson as defense.   Trust me,  if you don’t want anyone or anything to go through the net, these are the people you would put in as defense.

Schedule and photo courtesy of the Minnesota State High School League

This year’s unstoppable Trojan Boys soccer team includes ALC students Jose Sanchez and Joan Vasquez, as well as former ALC students Nery Perez and Erick Arauz.

As for the midfield we have Jose Sanchez on the right side, Carlos Munoz-Ramirez on the left side, and Luis Garsia in middle with Felipe Ortega by his side.  This combination of elite high school players is unstoppable.

This is the best team we have ever had.  With these players and the positions they play, I think we can make it to state.  The players and the coaching staff are all very confident in our team and its abilities.   We can only get better and that is bad news for everyone in our path.

Last week was Homecoming week at W.H.S.  We really put our act together by defeating the Medelia-St. James Black Hawks 9 to zip!  We didn’t expect any problems with this team because we had already beaten them once before in their house 12-0.   Now we’ve shut them out twice.

Tonight we play Central Minnesota Christian here at home.  We defeated them once before 8-1, so we hope to do well tonight.  So, come on out and support an amazing team and a great sport.  Go Worthington High School Soccer!!!!!!

This week’s jokes

Compiled by Priscila Garcia

Q. What is the difference between men and bonds?

A. Bonds eventually mature!!

Man says to God: “God, why did you make woman so beautiful?” God says: “So you would love her.”  “But God,” the man says, “why did you make her so dumb?” God answers: “So she would love you.”

Teacher: “Johnny. You know you can’t sleep in my class.”

Johnny:  “I know. But maybe if you were just a little quieter, I could!!!”

One day, a sarcastic teacher made the following announcement:  “If there are any idiots in the room, will they please stand up!” After a long silence, one student rose to his feet.  “Well now, mister, why do you consider yourself an idiot?” questioned the teacher with a sneer. “Actually I don’t,” said the student “but I hate to see you standing up there all by yourself!!”

  October Trivia

October is the tenth month in the Gregorian Calendar, the calendar presently in use.  It received its name from the Latin number octo, or eight, because it was the eighth month of the year in the old Roman Calendar.

The only legal holiday occurring in October is Columbus Day, a day honoring Christopher Columbus’ “discovery” of America on October 12, 1492.  As is the custom with many legal holidays, Columbus Day will be celebrated on a Monday.  This year, Columbus Day falls on October 9.  And guess what, most schools in Minnesota will not be closed on this day. Ha!  Columbus Day is known as Discovery Day in many Latin American countries and is also a holiday.  This holiday is not celebrated on Indian Reservation in the United States.

The second Friday of October 2006 happens to fall on the thirteenth day of the month.  Watch out, bad things may happen!

Students in Minnesota always look forward to the third Thursday and Friday of each October as days off from school.  Why?  It is the time when the Minnesota School Teachers’ Union, Education Minnesota, has its statewide convention.  So, do school teachers actually have to go to this convention?  The answer is no.  We could not find one teacher who has ever attended.

(Continued à)

October has given its name to one of the best-known German festivals, Octoberfest.  It began on October 17, 1810 as a wedding-day celebration for King Ludwig I.  It continues to be a big festival in Germany, as well as in American cities with large German-American populations, such as New Ulm, Minnesota, and La Crosse and Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

We change our clocks back to regular time from daylight savings time at 1:00 am on the last Sunday of the each October.  The idea of Daylight Savings Time was first dreamed up by none other than Benjamin Franklin in 1784.

October ends with Halloween, or All Hallow’s Eve.  It is a religious festival in some countries, but a night of trick-or-treating in the United States.

Flowers for the Month of October are the calendula and the cosmos.  Birthstones for the month are the opal and the tourmaline.
