It’s Spring!!!

By Tobby

On March 20th, the most exciting day ever happens.  It’s the first day of SPRING!!!  Spring is the time when all the magic happens.  There’s a rumor going around that a Leprechaun is on the loose.  It said that it loves to hide around forest areas and it will only show up when a rainbow comes out.

Spring is when the snow starts disappearing and the people stop complaining about it being cold.  It’s a time for sports. It is great weather to play football in.

A person can really enjoy the weather because it’s not too cold and it’s not too hot.  Summer is just too hot and we know during the winter it gets to cold to even go outside.  I love to barbeque in the spring.  I can cook the best chicken and ribs on my grill.

Spring brings a lot of birthdays.  From the 21st to the 25th are the days of most all of my buddies’ birthdays.  And there’s nothing better than someone throwing a barbeque and hanging out outside.

March 24th is the birthday of the greatest magicians who ever lived.  He is known as The Great Harry Houdini.  He preformed stunts, acts, etc. throughout the U.S.  I always wonder how magicians do these things and yet I still can’t figure it out.

I hope everyone has a happy spring and don’t forget to come to school, even when the weather is so nice.

Help For Troubled Teens

By Dani Zinnel

We all go through trouble but some of us don’t know where or who we can go to for help or for someone to talk to. You always have someone to talk to. There are people out there that want and can help you. The one major thing a teen should never do is turn to drugs or alcohol to drain the pain. Trust me it only helps for the little bit that you are high or drunk and sometimes it only makes it worse.

One thing I like to do is listen to Dawson McAllister on the radio at 101.3 or you can call him at 1-800-394-hope. You don’t even have to call him I just sit in my room and listen. It helps to know that you’re not the only one feeling this way.

Recent studies have shown that 40 to 50 percent of troubled teens will have thought about committing suicide and 30 percent have actually tried. We need to stop the pain before it gets to that point. No one in this world should feel like they don’t belong. Everyone has a place in this world.

Studies have also shown that at least 2 million teens between the ages of 13 and 17 run away from home each year. Most everyone thinks that the teen years are the best years of our lives, but when you think about it they are very likely to be the worst.

(Continued à)

Most people in the world grow up with these feelings and showed signs when they were teens.  But no one paid enough attention to them. Now it is almost too late for them to get help, and will take them a lot more time to heal than it would have if they were still our age.

If you have feelings about committing suicide, it would be best to find someone to talk to before these feelings get worse. There are girls and boys sitting by phones waiting for your call at the girls and boys hotline. Call them at 1-800-448-3000.

So whenever you need to talk about something or if you just need to listen, tune in or call. They will be there for you. There are also plenty of other hotlines and other people you can talk to. Your friends are good to go to with your problems.

So remember that there is always a way out. No matter how deep it may be you can always find a way through if you’re willing to get the help. There is always help and someone waiting at the other end of a telephone just sitting and waiting for it to ring and you to be on the other end.

Jon Bon Jovi

By Katie Galer

Jon Bon Jovi was born on March 2, 1962 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey.  Jon Bon Jovi’s band, Bon Jovi, was very popular in the 80’s.  They were hard-core rockers and knew how to come out with an outstanding album.

Bon Jovi went multi-platinum with their albums Slippery When Wet and New Jersey.   In July of 1990, Jon Bon Jovi put his band career on hold and made his own solo album. These songs were inspired by the movie Young Guns II.

Bon Jovi’s main inspirations were Steven Tyler, Joe Elliott, Paul Stanley, The Rolling Stones, and Led Zeppelin.  All of these artists made a dramatic effect on the rock generation over time.

Bon Jovi made and recorded some of the best songs of the 80’s, and I listened to them pretty much my whole life.  Just like most of 80’s rock music, Bon Jovi had an inventive way of getting their fans into their music and living the 80’s like they were supposed to be lived.

Bon Jovi has sold over 120 million albums worldwide.  Jon is the owner of the Arena Football League team called the Philadelphia Soul.  Jon Bon Jovi plays the guitar, piano, harmonica and drums in his free-time.

Most people would probably recognize at least some of their songs.  Some of their most popular ones were “You Give Love a Bad Name,” “Wanted Dead or Alive,” and “Livin’ On A Prayer.”  Members of Bon Jovi are highly appreciated and respected for their accomplishments they have made throughout the years.

If you have never heard Bon Jovi you should check them out.  Their new album Lost Highway is in stores now!

Uranus

By Diego

I want to tell you a little about Uranus. No not the one in your pants. I am talking about the planet.

Uranus was discovered on March 13,1781. The planet was discovered by William Herschel. Other scientists had seen the planet before, but it was thought to be a star.  One scientist even cataloged it as star 34 Tauri.

Herschel’s name for his new planet was Georgium Sidus after some king of England. The name was changed later on to Uranus so it matched the other planets names. The other names were based on mythological gods. What did this Greek god do that was so bad that he was named after an infamous body part for all of time?

So how about a little about this cheeky planet.  Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun. We are the third so it’s probably pretty cold on Uranus. Uranus is huge! It is the third largest planet in the solar system.

The planet was visited by the Voyager 2 in 1986. It helped discover Uranus to be a gassy planet.  The gasses cause rings around Uranus like Saturn’s.

Uranus has five large moons and ten small moons. Due to its conditions and the distance from Earth, there is little chance I will ever visit Uranus.

Remembering Dr. Seuss

By Paul Martinez

Dr.Seuss was a famous author who wrote books for little kids. His books included Green Eggs and Ham, The Cat in the Hat, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, There’s a Wocket in my Pocket, and others.

He wrote and illustrated something like 44 kids books.  The style of Dr. Seuss was to write in rhyme, a style of writing that appeals to little kids.

Doctor Seuss was born March 2, in 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts.  He died September 24 in 1991 in San Diego, California.  He was 87. I did that hardcore math for you just in case you don’t have a calculator handy.

Some of his stories have been turned into 5 star movies. The Cat in the Hat  and The Grinch were two recent ones.   The new Dr. Seuss movie just came out last week.  Horton Hears a Who, is an animated movie for the children, but I’m sure the adults will love it too.   It’s about an elephant with big ears and good hearing.

I personally enjoy most of the Dr. Seuss books, even though they are for little kids.  These books are a joy to read, and the rhyming is not all that bad.

The Great Harry Houdini

By Enrique Suchite

Harry Houdini was a very good magician, but what he was the best at was escaping restraints of any kind. He was born in Budapest, Hungary.

Harry Houdin’s real name was Ehrich Weiss. He made his public debut as a 10-year-old trapeze artist, calling himself "Ehrich, the Prince of the Air."

When Weiss became a magician he took the name of “Harry Houdini.” He came up with the name from two sources that he chose because he was influenced by them.  The French magician Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin and the magician Harry Keller.

From 1907 into the 1920s, Houdini performed with great success in the United States. Houdini perform some of the most outstanding stunts of the Twentieth Century. His most famous one was the “Chinese Water Torture Cell” in which he was suspended upside-down in a locked glass-and-steel cabinet full to overflowing with water.

Houdini died because of a ruptured appendix. He was visiting McGill University when a student came in and asked him if it was true that he would take any blow to the stomach.  Houdini said yes then the student punched him 3 times without warning.  The unexpected punches caused an inflamed appendix to rupture.

Houdini is remembered on March 24th, his birthday.  He was a great entertainer, and led the way for most of today’s great escapologist such as Chris Angel.
