Worthington, along with six other communities in Minnesota, has received a three-year grant, Minnesota Youth Community Learning (MYCL) Initiative, from the University of Minnesota Konopka Institute to fund a community-driven partnership with one straightforward goal: “Our youth finish school”. The 2006-2007 school year marks the second year of Learning Links, a program that works to build community capacity to address the needs of all the youth in our community through support of youth, parents, schools, and the Worthington community. In the first year, Learning Links worked to develop a mentoring program, an after school program at the middle school (R.E.A.C.H.) and a program at the high school where tutoring was available. Learning Links was also instrumental in starting the new parent program, Parents Advocating for Student Success (PASS). This year Learning Links will reach community’s youth through the continuation and expansion of its programs Our goals will be realized by: linking high school students with a community teacher; engaging middle school students; assisting parents in providing positive parenting and educational support for their middle school and high school students; assisting schools to enhance a sense of connectedness for young people; strengthening Worthington’s capacity to address the needs of all youth in our community, by working together with the other six communities that are part of the MYCL initiative. Learning Links’ mission statement is to empower high school and middle school students, through pairing them with a caring adult in our community, academic assistance programs, and service learning projects, to develop positive skills that enable them to finish school. The vision statement of Learning Links envisions a community in which youth experience nurturing relationships and community support, which in turn allows them to develop into their full potential, capable of making informed, responsible decisions allowing them to finish school.
