Culturally Responsive Youth Work Matters

(FULL-We are placing people on a wait list for a future session)

Whether you are just starting to work with youth or various culture groups, or you have been at it for awhile, this course will challenge you to grow in the area of intercultural competence.

 

Wednesdays, June 23, 30 and July 7, 9:00 a.m.—3:30 p.m.

Held January-April, 2010:

Cultural Intelligence Book/Discussion Group

This class is designed for educators who would like to grow in their understanding of various cultures and how cultures interact with one another.  We will use the book Cultural Intelligence by Brooks Peterson as a resource.  Some sessions will feature discussions with immigrants about their culture and traditions.  Participants will have the opportunity to take the Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) and review their individual results with the facilitator.  Teachers from NCIC member districts adjacent to Worthington will be reimbursed for mileage at the IRS rate. Certificates of participation provided.

2 hour workshop

Leadership: An Art of Possibility

 

This training is based on the video by Drs. Ben and Roz Zander entitled: Leadership: An Art of Possibility.  It is inspirational and generates positive discussion amongst leaders.


Three-day seminar

Many Faces of Southwest Minnesota: Best Practices in working with immigrant families

 

Available as a summer session, if requested.

Open to professionals who want to explore the cultural mosaic of Southwest Minnesota, dialogue with individuals who have im-migrated to this area and network with other professionals who are working with an increasingly diverse population.  This course will feature a blend of research based instruction, small-group dialogue & immersion experiences. Certificates of attendance will be provided. (24 clock hours) Ethnic lunches will also be provided.

2 hour         seminar Moving from Cultural Collisions to Cultural Competence and Beyond This seminar is appropriate for anyone who works with culturally diverse individuals.  It specifically addressed the cultural continuum, cultural metaphors, cultural collisions and the underlying reasons for them.  The seminar challenges individuals to reflect on their own attitudes and actions, seek increased knowledge and experience with other cultures and share insights that they have learned.
1.5 - 2 hour workshop Voices of Immigrants Participants will view and discuss the Voices of Immigrants documentary.  NCIC staff will facilitate group discussion on cultural similarities and differences and how they relate to the modern day immigrant's experiences and integration into American society.

Teacher Exchange Visits or Networking Meetings

  1. Teachers of same grade level or content area would visit each other’s classrooms (NCIC would pay for subs so teachers could network)
  2. Teachers would meet together to discuss effective practices in their areas and brainstorm new ways to address common challenges.

  1. NCIC is developing a library of resources which is available for teachers to check out.  It includes CDs, Videos, Books and some magazines.  Please call if you are looking for a resource.  We may be able to help.
