In celebration of National Neighbor Works ® week from June 7th to June 11th, the Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership (SWMHP), with partners Minnesota Energy Resources, JBS, Doug Nau Construction, and Dr. Randall Bjork, has created a scholarship program to increase the educational opportunities for residents within the SWMHP’s service area. “We are proud of the work SWMHP and local communities have accomplished to meet housing needs and strengthen our communities.  Through this scholarship program we continue to foster opportunities for families in our region,” said SWMHP Executive Director Rick Goodemann.

The scholarships were awarded in a brief ceremony at the Nobles County Integration Collaborative in Worthington on June 7th at 6:00pm.  The applications were available to students throughout the SW MN Housing Partnership area.  Five recipients were selected from Worthington and two were selected from St. James.

The following local students each received a $500 scholarship from an individual or local business: Susana Murillo from Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership/Emerging Markets Program; Sameera Nalla from Minnesota Energy Resources; Yunuen Velazquez from JBS; Ricky Thonglyvong from Nau Construction and Alison Synavone from Dr. Randall Bjork.

The Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership is part of the National NeighborWorks ® network which is a group of nonprofit organizations throughout the country that work to create homeownership opportunities, revitalize communities, and create quality affordable rental properties.  Since its formation in 1992, over 100 cities, counties, and neighborhoods have found success in collaborating with the Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership.  These partnerships have yielded an increase of over 4,900 units of quality affordable housing for families.  These units include single family and multi-family, rehabilitation and new construction, and housing with services.  If you are interested in learning more about the SWMHP, please contact Lisa Graphenteen, Community Development Director, at (507) 836-1614.
