Raising a Gifted Child

Family plays an important role in providing learning experiences for children. You can recognize and build on the strengths and talents you see in your children.

*Encourage curiosity and creativity

*Help your children find activities they love

*Give your children opportunities to take healthy risks

*Young gifted children need to become comfortable with trying new things

*Children also need to become comfortable with learning from mistakes

*Encourage your child to seek the fun and excitement of new challenges

Cognitive Needs:
Do gifted children have specific needs as learners?
The answer is yes. There is a connection between the level to which these needs are addressed and gifted student learning. Cognitive needs that differentiate gifted children from others:

  • To be exposed to new and challenging information about the environment and the culture.
  • To be exposed to varied subjects and concerns.
  • To be allowed to pursue ideas as far as their interests take them.
  • To encounter and use increasingly difficult vocabulary and concepts.
  • To be exposed to ideas at rates appropriate to the individual's pace of learning.
  • To pursue inquiries beyond alloted time spans.

Ultimately, sometimes the lessons, time spans, and/or activities look different for the gifted learner.
