Developmental Cognitive Disability

Prairie Elementary has two resource rooms which provide educational services for students who meet criteria for Developmental Cognitive Disabilities (DCD) or Developmental Delay (DD). Karen Weinandt works with students in grades K-3. Lana Grimmius works with students in grades 4-5. In some cases, students who have shown a need for additional support in other Special Education areas are also included depending on their individual needs. The amount of time students spend in the resource room is determined by the Individual Educational Planning team. Students are mainstreamed with the regular education class when it is determined to be beneficial. Collaboration between general and special educators is critical to the success of these students. Additional support serves such as Occupational Therapy (O.T.), Speech and Language (S/L), and/or Developmental Adapted Physical Education (DAPE) are also available to those students who meet criteria. Paraprofessionals are available to assist in both of these classrooms to ensure students receive the necessary help.
