WHS to Host an Educator Workshop on Cultural Competency in Education
Independent School District 518 in collaboration with Southwest Minnesota State University and Minnesota West Community and Technical College will be hosting a workshop for educators focusing on cultural competency in education. This workshop is being held on Monday June 17th and Tuesday June 18th at Worthington High School. Attendees include teachers, instructors, professors, and other staff from ISD 518, SMSU, and Minnesota West.
Some of the topics scheduled to be discussed include building a positive learning environment, fostering family involvement, and the benefits of knowing and understanding students’ cultural backgrounds. This workshop is particularly helpful within our area as we benefit from great cultural diversity. Recognizing the strengths inherit in this diversity is an important aspect of providing excellence in education at ISD 518.
Funding for this workshop was provided by the Southwest Initiative Foundation and by the McKnight Foundation. This program is part of an effort to expand the cultural competency of our staff and is a step in the goal towards growing and diversifying the teacher workforce. This program will open doors towards establishing a teaching degree program in the Worthington area.
