Because We Care

As your school mental health team our job is to help especially during times of stress and anxiety. We believe it is important to acknowledge some recent issues with some negative social media accounts. These social media accounts have been used to bully other students, spread rumors, and just be mean to one another. Despite all of this, we can make it through this together. We, as your mental health team, want to be able to support you and have conversations about healthy ways to cope with your feelings. Please reach out and talk with trusted adults  in your life.

Your school counselors, social workers and psychologists are here to support all students, families and staff. No matter what changes come along, nothing will change our commitment to you!

Important Annoucement Concerning Instagram Accounts

We need your help. Recently, district staff have seen an increased number of reports from students regarding inappropriate/harmful/hurtful Instagram accounts. It appears that multiple Instagram accounts have been created by our students to publicly shame others, disclose embarrassing information and spread rumors.  In some instances pictures have been taken of students without their permission and posted on these accounts.

Staff have reported many sites to Instagram over the past few days and asked for them to be taken down. Some of the sites only have a few followers, but some have many students viewing and posting content.  As we get one site taken down, others appear. So, here is where we need parents help to bring this to an end.

What can parents do to help?

  • Let your child/ren know they can always come to you to talk about what they are experiencing online.
  • Have conversations with your child/ren about their social media usage. Check their phones and their social media usage.
  • Remind your child/ren that what they post on social media never really goes away.  Sites can be shut down or images removed, but people’s lives and feelings can forever be affected and harmed.
  • Encourage your child/ren to report any inappropriate accounts to Instagram and have them block the account on their social media.
  • Teach your child/ren that if they wouldn’t say out loud to you what they post online, they shouldn’t be posting it.

And to our District 518 students – you are better than this. You also have a role to help solve this problem. Stand up for those that are being bullied. Report these accounts yourself to Instagram, or even better yet don’t be a follower of these accounts. You can always unsubscribe from following an account and we would suggest this would be a great option. Words can hurt for a lifetime. We are above all of this and we should spend our time doing better things for our fellow classmates.

Defiendan a quienes estén siendo acosados.

2022 Minnesota Student Survey

District 518 will be participating in the 2022 Minnesota Student Survey (MSS) 2022. The tentative time frame for this survey is January 18 through June 10 which is a large testing window.  Each building will be communicating to parents when the actual survey dates are scheduled.  The MSS is one of the longest running youth surveys in the nation. This survey is an anonymous statewide school-based survey conducted to gain insights into the world of students and their experiences.  This survey will be given to our students in grades 5, 8, 9, and 11. The survey is voluntary and is not a requirement to participate. Parents can choose not to have their children participate and students themselves can decide not to take the survey.  You would need to notify your child’s school of this decision prior to the survey being conducted.

Why is the survey important?

The MSS is the primary source of comprehensive data on youth at the state, county and local level in Minnesota and is the only consistent source of statewide data on the health and well-being of youth from smaller population groups, such as racial or ethnic groups. It provides valuable information about issues vital to the health, safety, and academic success of young people. The survey results have proven to be a dynamic vehicle in bringing the youth voice into decisions made by youth programs, schools, communities, and state agencies.  It is also important in securing grant funding, federal and state funding, and to assist our local community and schools.

John Landgaard, Superintendent

John Landgaard,

 Superintendente
