Board Brief – March 16, 2021 Regular School Board Meeting

Board briefs are a quick look at some of the items addressed at Independent School District 518 board meetings. This includes topics discussed, actions taken, and recognitions of staff, students, community members, and board members. For more information, please refer to the full meeting minutes that are posted to the district website at www.isd518.net/school-board. All regularly scheduled ISD 518 school board meetings are open to the public.

Board Brief – March 16, 2021: Regular School Board Meeting

  • The board approved returning to a traditional grading scale (A through F) at Worthington High School and Worthington Middle School beginning in the fourth quarter. This will mark the end of the regular use of “No Credit” and “Passing” grades for students. The fourth quarter of the 2020-2021 school year begins on March 29, 2021.
  • The board confirmed the name for the intermediate school currently under construction at the Crailsheim site will be the Intermediate School.
  • The board approved the expansion of the budget for a new Community Education facility from $15 million to $17.5 million to accommodate construction of spaces such as an indoor play area and additional preschool space.
    • The expanded funding for the increased budget was approved to come from remaining bond funds available from the construction of the intermediate school. The intermediate school has received bids totaling under $4 million of the original projected cost. This means the additional needed funds for construction of the new Community Education facility will not be taken from the district general fund.
    • If the funds for the increased Community Education facility budget were taken from the district general fund, over $800,000 dollars from the state of Minnesota for funding the construction of the Intermediate School would have become unavailable. This money is available from the Ag2School tax credit that is available to area agricultural landowners.
  • Superintendent John Landgaard reported meeting with the incident management team, a group of local healthcare and government professionals, about the district’s current learning plan. That group approved the continued usage of the current learning plan. The full in-person learning schedule currently in place is planned for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year.

School Board Recognition Week

School Board Recognition Week for 2021 is February 22 through 26. During this special week, districts ask community members to join them in recognizing the hard work and commitment put forward by school board members in their communities. The vital function this elected board of education plays in our district community cannot be overstated. Board members take on a level of responsibility for many things including student education achievement and goals, staffing decisions and facility maintenance.

“Strong communities are built upon a foundation of strong schools. For schools to thrive, it takes the devotion of men and women on school boards to ensure student needs are being met equitably and all are learning at a high level,” ISD 518 superintendent John Landgaard says. “Many hours of deliberating tough decisions and studying issues around education and regulation are a few of the commitments made by board members.”

Landgaard states the key work of school boards is to ensure a quality and equitable education for all students by:

  • Making student achievement the top priority;
  • Fostering a safe, well-ordered education system where students can learn and staff can educate;
  • Creating and implementing standards for what students will be expected to learn and be able to perform;
  • Confirming progress is being made towards district goals and that all students are equitably learning at expected levels;
  • Being accountable for their actions and decisions by continually tracking and reporting results to all stakeholders;
  • Working towards the need for continuous improvement by questioning, revising, and refining issues related to student achievement.

“Even though we make a special effort to show our appreciation for school board members in February, their contribution is a year-round commitment,” says Landgaard.

The members serving on the ISD 518 School Board are:

  • Lori Dudley, board chair
  • Joel Lorenz, board vice chair
  • Brad Shaffer, board treasurer
  • Steve Schnieder, board clerk
  • Mike Harberts, board member
  • Adam Blume, board member
  • Tom Prins, board member

The ISD 518 School Board will be holding a public meeting for district community members to discuss the Community Education Building Plan on March 8 beginning at 7:00 p.m. at West Learning Center. A presentation of the current plan will be made followed by opportunity for public input. All are welcome to attend. ISD 518 asks that all guest please respect social distancing and face masking guidelines.

The next regular school board meeting will be held on March 16 at 5:15 p.m. in the Worthington High School media center. All are welcome to attend. ISD 518 asks that all guest please respect social distancing and face masking guidelines.

Across District 518, Care Will be Taken to Comply With Social Distancing Guidelines as Strictly as Possible

On Tuesday, February 16, all students in ISD 518 facilities will be instructed using in-person learning. This day will be the beginning of full-time in-person learning for all students. District 518 is overjoyed that we will once again have the opportunity to educate all students in full in-person classes. Across the district, care will be taken to comply with social distancing guidelines as strictly as possible. However, due to space limitations within some areas of district facilities, this may not be possible at all times.

While all students take part in full-time in-person learning, continued care will be taken to follow all guidelines provided by the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) and the Center for Disease Control (CDC) whenever possible. These include social distancing of students and teachers as far apart as space will allow. Due to space limitations in some areas of ISD 518 facilities, distance between students will be under the recommended guideline of three feet. Whenever possible, students will be spread out to continue following all social distancing guidelines.

Many shared student areas in district buildings do not have the space needed to follow the three-foot social distancing recommendation. While measures such as moving students to classrooms to eat meals have been implemented, cafeterias, hallways, buses, locker areas, and restrooms may often include a number of students that does not allow for social distancing of three feet.

In-person learning for all ISD 518 students is an incredible opportunity made possible by following guidelines from the state and federal agencies as closely as possible. Proper face masking and frequent cleaning of surfaces are examples of the many guidelines the district will continue to follow. In shared student spaces, ISD 518 will work to protect the health and safety of all students and staff while considering space issues and the inability to fully social distance students at all times.
