ISD 518 will continue using a distance learning model until Friday, November 27th. Administration and the school board will work with local and state agencies to determine if a safe return to hybrid learning is possible on Monday, November 30th.

ISD 518 Schools Added to MDH COVID-19 Webpage

ISD 518 Students, Families, and Community Members,


Due to recently meeting the threshold of five or more confirmed positive cases of COVID-19 within a school building, Prairie Elementary and Worthington High School will be listed on the Minnesota Department of Health website on the “Cases in Pre-K through Grade 12 School Buildings, by County” webpage. Independent District 518 would like to remain as transparent as possible while continuing to protect the rights of privacy of its students and staff. The district is currently working on ways to better provide up to date information to our community regarding cases of COVID-19 within our district.

Though Prairie Elementary and Worthington High School may be listed on the MDH webpage, at this time the percentage of confirmed cases in relation to the total student population is relatively low. There is also data suggesting the rate of transmission within schools is remarkably low, likely due to the strict health and safety requirements that are in place at district facilities.

District 518 administration is working towards a return to hybrid learning as soon as it is safe to do so. Meetings with various state and local agencies continue as the district monitors not only the health of students and staff, but also the health of the district community as a whole. It is critical that the public follow suggested guidelines including proper mask wearing, avoiding large crowds, and keeping six feet of distance between individuals.

Distance learning at ISD 518 will continue through the established minimum two week period that began on Monday, November 2nd. Communication with families and students about a return to hybrid learning will take place as soon as a decision on that return has been made. Thank you for your support in continuing to effectively and equitably educate District 518 students while prioritizing student safety during this tumultuous school year.

Independent School District 518 Students and Families,


We have all been dealing with the additional stress and changes since the COVID-19 pandemic began eight months ago.  During the past eight months, our country has also suffered from racial unrest and political turmoil.  All of these things have taken a huge toll on our mental health.  

As your school counselors’ our job is to help during times of stress and anxiety.  We believe it is important to acknowledge the many challenges we are currently facing in our lives.  Many of us are feeling anxious, depressed, overwhelmed and stressed. Despite all of this, we can make it through this together.  We, as your counselors, want to be able to support you and have conversations about healthy ways to cope with these feelings.  Please reach out and talk with a trusted individual in your life.  

Regardless of your political beliefs, socioeconomic background, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, religion and other factors, it is important to have empathy and treat others with respect and dignity.  Students or families may differ in a wide variety of ways, whether it is in regards to what they value or how they live their lives.  However, whether it is in the classroom, on the field, in church, or just across the streets in your neighborhood, we all should value and respect each other’s right to live.

Todos hemos estado haciendo frente al estrés adicional y a los cambios desde que empezó la pandemia COVID-19 hacen ya ocho meses. Durante los últimos meses, nuestro país también ha sufrido disturbios raciales y agitación política, todas estas cosas han perjudicado grandemente nuestra salud mental.

Como consejeros académicos nuestro trabajo es ayudar durante momentos de estrés y ansiedad, nosotros creemos es importante reconocer las dificultades que actualmente estamos enfrentando en nuestras vidas. Muchos de nosotros nos estamos sintiendo nerviosos, deprimidos, abrumados y estresados; a pesar de todo esto, juntos podemos superar todo esto. Nosotros como consejeros, te queremos respaldar y conversar sobre las maneras saludables de hacer frente a estas emociones, te pedimos que por favor te acerques y platiques con una persona de confianza en tu vida.     

Sea cual fuere su afiliación política, nivel socioeconómico, raza, origen étnico, orientación sexual, identidad sexual, discapacidad, religión u otros factores, es importante tener empatía y tratar otros con respeto y dignidad. Las familias y estudiantes pueden diferir de muchísimas maneras, ya sea en cuanto a lo que valoran o como viven sus vidas. No obstante, ya sea en el aula de clases, en el trabajo, en la iglesia o tan solo sea otro lado de la calle en la vecindad, todos debemos valorar y respetar el derecho de vivir de cada uno.

All ISD 518 Students Will Be Educated Using a Full Distance Learning Model Beginning Monday, November 2nd

ISD 518 Students, Families, and Community Members,


As information surrounding cases of COVID-19 in our district community continues to develop, Independent School District 518 administration must adapt to deliver a safe, effective, and equitable education for all students. Due to recent information received from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) on the increase of COVID-19 cases in the District 518 area, administration has made the decision to shift to a full distance learning model for all students. This decision was driven by the district’s top priority, the safety of all ISD 518 students.

All Independent School District 518 students will be educated using a full distance learning model beginning Monday, November 2nd. Expectations for students during full distance learning remain the same as they have been during distance learning days in the hybrid learning model. As with all COVID-19 related issues, this decision was made in consultation and cooperation with MDH.

ISD 518 administration will continue to work with local and state agencies to determine the safest way to educate students while working towards its goal of providing as much in-person learning for students as possible. Full distance learning will remain the learning model for a minimum of two weeks, beginning November 2nd. A return to hybrid learning will be communicated from the district when a target date is determined.

The plan for educating students during the COVID-19 pandemic was created in such a way that health, safety, effectiveness, equity, and flexibility were prioritized. Due to the information received, it has become necessary to utilize the flexibility created in the 2020-2021 education plan. Information on how District 518 will implement a full distance learning education model can be found on the ISD 518 website.

District 518 understands the critical role is plays in the community reaching beyond the education of students, from childcare, to food service, extra-curricular activities, counseling, and more. The district will continue to make these services available to the fullest extent of its ability while also prioritizing the health and safety of its students, staff, and the district community as a whole. Independent School District 518 administration would like to thank students, families, and community members for allowing the district to make this necessary learning model change. Administration, in consultation with MDH, believes this change is essential to protect the health and safety of our students, staff, and district community. District 518 will look to resume as much in-person learning for students as possible as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.

A medida que la información relacionada con los casos COVID-19 en la comunidad de nuestro distrito continúa evolucionando, la administración del Distrito Escolar Independiente 518 debe adaptarse para brindar una educación segura, eficaz y equitativa para todos los estudiantes. Debido a la información reciente recibida del Departamento de Salud de Minnesota (MDH) sobre el aumento de casos de COVID-19 en el área del Distrito 518, la administración ha tomado la decisión de cambiar a un método completo de estudio a distancia para todos los estudiantes. Esta decisión fue generada por la prioridad máxima del distrito, la seguridad de todos los estudiantes de ISD 518.

La administración del distrito escolar independiente 518 quiere agradecer a los estudiantes, familias y residentes de la comunidad por permitir que el distrito haga este cambio necesario en el método de educación. As approved by the ISD 518 school board, students will be educated using a hybrid learning model beginning on Monday, October 5th. Student groups and day(s) of in-person attendance will remain the same as the beginning of the school year. Please see ISD 518 website for more information including a calendar for the month of October.

El día 5 de octubre el distrito 518 cambiará al método mixto de estudio.

Según lo aprobado por la junta escolar del Distrito escolar 518 y a partir del 5 de octubre, los estudiantes se educarán usando el método de aprendizaje mixto. Los grupos de estudiantes y los días de asistencia a clase en persona seguirán siendo los mismos que al inicio del año escolar. ISD 518 to Continue Select Extra-Curricular Activities During Distance Learning | Continuación de actividades extracurriculares durante educación a distancia del Distrito 518

Independent School District 518 will continue to allow practices and contests for select extra-curricular activities in the district. Girls and boys cross county, girls and boys soccer, girls tennis, volleyball for grades 9 through 12, and football for grades 9 through 12 have been permitted to move forward. Activities not permitted to continue with practices or contests include middle school volleyball, middle school football, weight lifting, and marching band. All extra-curricular activities will continue to be monitored by district administration on a daily basis.

The safety of District 518 students and the community that surrounds them is the first priority of ISD 518. The extra-curricular activities that are permitted to move forward have been selected based on their sanction by the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) and their ability of to follow guidelines provided by MSHSL, the Big South Conference, and the Minnesota Department of Health. Should the safety of students, staff, or community members become a concern or new information be received, ISD 518 may make altercations to any activity program.

It is the goal of District 518 to continue to provide as many extra-curricular opportunities as possible while doing so in a safe environment for students. Josh Dale, ISD 518 Activities Director, has reviewed and implemented guidelines and best practices for extra-curricular activities to honor the health and safety of students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

All extra-curricular activities may resume should the learning model at ISD 518 change to hybrid learning and proper safety protocols continue to be observed. The projected date for District 518 to return to hybrid learning is October 5th.

El distrito escolar independiente 518 continuará permitiendo prácticas y torneos en las actividades extracurriculares seleccionadas y estos deportes son: campo traviesa masculino y femenino, fútbol masculino y femenino, tenis femenino, voleibol para estudiantes del 9º al 12º grado, y fútbol americano para estudiantes del 9º al 12º grado. Los deportes que no tendrán prácticas ni torneos son: vóleibol y fútbol americano para estudiantes de Middle School, levantamiento pesas y banda marcial. La administración del distrito continuará supervisando a diario todas las actividades extracurriculares.

La prioridad primordial del Distrito 518 es la seguridad de los estudiantes y de la comunidad que los rodea. Las actividades extracurriculares que se permiten continuar se han seleccionado porque son actividades al aire libre y la habilidad que se tiene con este tipo de actividad de cumplir con las normas de la liga deportiva de las escuelas secundaria(MSHSL), la liga deportiva del sur de Minnesota y el departamento de salud del estado y el Distrito 518 hará cambios a cualquier actividad, si llega a afectar la seguridad de los estudiantes, empleados o de la comunidad o si se recibe nueva información.

El objetivo del Distrito 518 es continuar ofreciendo tantas oportunidades extracurriculares como sea posible y haciéndolo en un entorno seguro para los estudiantes. El director de actividades deportivas del Distrito 518, Sr. Josh Dale, ha revisado e implementado las normas y mejores prácticas de actividades extracurriculares para cumplir con la seguridad y salud de los estudiantes durante la pandemia COVID-19.

This change will be implemented for a minimum of two weeks with a target return to hybrid learning date of October 5th. Expectations for students during full distance learning remain the same as they have been during distance learning days in the hybrid learning model. As with all COVID-19 related issues, this decision was made in consultation and cooperation with MDH.

The plan for educating students during the COVID-19 pandemic was created in such a way that health, safety, effectiveness, equity, and flexibility were prioritized. A possible shift to a distance learning model had been planned for and accommodated from the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year. Acknowledging that new information may arrive at any time, District 518 worked to be prepared for a possible necessary change in learning model. It is due to this extra planning by ISD 518 staff and administration that the fluid shift to a distance learning model is possible.

Mientras que se sigue dando noticas de casos COVID-19 en el distrito escolar de nuestra comunidad, la administración del distrito debe adoptarse para ofrecer a todos sus estudiantes una educación segura, eficaz y equitativa.
