Family Resources During COVID-19

ISD 518 has created a page to share resources with our district families and students during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minnesota’s Governor closed schools from March 18, 2020 – March 27, 2020 as a way to help slow down the spread of the virus. Students will not have school during this time but it is very important they practice social distancing and stay home.
The most effective way to keep germs away is to wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds, multiple times per day.

Check the Family Resources page for up to date information.

Upcoming School Closure Mandated by Governor Tim Walz – Wednesday, March 18th through Friday, March 27th.

Upcoming School Closure Mandated by Governor Tim Walz

Independent School District 518 (ISD 518) will be closed from Wednesday, March 18th through Friday, March 27th. This is in accordance with Governor Tim Walz’s Emergency Executive Order 20-02, given on Sunday, March 15th. During the closure time, ISD 518 will be preparing a plan for Distance Learning.

ISD 518 understands the importance of community mitigation in response to the growing number of confirmed cases of COVID-19. The school district plays an important part in this process and will continue working to teach social distancing as well as good hygiene and health habits such as frequent and thorough hand washing, using hand sanitizer when soap and water are not available, covering coughs without using bare hands, and staying home when sick.

Visitors to ISD 518 facilities will be limited on Monday, March 16th and Tuesday, March 17th. Beginning Wednesday, March 18th, staff will report to district locations but there will be no instruction for students through March 27th. During this closure time, ISD 518 would like to ask the public to not enter district facilities unless otherwise invited or by appointment only. Building occupancy hours across the district will be 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Food service will be available during the closure period. More information on the lunch program will be released at a later time.

Registration for new students will be by appointment only. District buildings will be closed to the public and all athletics and activity meetings and practices are cancelled by order of the Minnesota State High School League.

Schools are centers of their communities. It is critical to public health that students, staff, and community members participate in the social distancing measures that are being recommended by the Minnesota Department of Health, the Center for Disease Control, and ISD 518.

ISD 518 Superintendent John Landgaard says, “I want to express my appreciation for all District 518 employees for their support and willingness to help in a number of ways supporting students, families, and the District 518 community. By pulling together and thinking outside of the box, we will continue to provide high quality, equitable education and support others in our district community.”

ISD 518 Coronavirus (COVID-19) Information

Independent School District 518 Statement on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Independent School District 518 is staying up to date with the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak occurring throughout the world. The Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota Department of Health are holding weekly meetings with all school administrative officials to bring the latest news and recommendations to school systems throughout the state.

Currently, ISD 518 is following all recommendations from these entities including the upkeep of general health and safety practices such as routine cleaning of frequently used surfaces as well as the promotion of hand washing and the use of hand sanitizer.

The Minnesota Department of Education and the Minnesota Department of Health are currently not recommending postponing or cancelling any school time, extra-curricular events, or other gatherings. District 518 will continue to monitor the situation and stay up to date with the latest information.

The most helpful things families within District 518 can do at this time are follow proper hand washing techniques and keep students home if they show symptoms of illness. Symptoms that would be signs a student should stay home from school include fever, frequent cough, frequent shortness of breath, or any symptom that inhibits their ability to perform regular tasks. These symptoms may not be caused by Coronavirus (COVID-19), but would be reasons for a student to not attend school in all circumstances.

ISD 518 has a plan for events such as the outbreak of disease. The district protocols for a pandemic can be found in the District Crisis Management Plan. This plan may be viewed on the ISD 518 website. These protocols were reviewed, revised, and approved by the school board in the fall of 2019 and continue to be reviewed and updated. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) is monitoring, examining, and addressing the risks of Coronavirus (COVID-19) from individuals who are entering or returning to the United States or who otherwise may present a health risk. District 518 has been informed that the CDC or another official organization will be contacting schools if they may be at risk. At this time, all Minnesota school districts are taking their directives from the Minnesota Department of Health and the CDC to address any possible issues related to Coronavirus (COVID-19).

School Board Recognition Week set for February 17th – 21st

The Minnesota School Boards Association has set February 17th through the 21st as School Board Recognition Week in Minnesota as a time to build awareness and understanding of the vital function an elected board of education plays in our communities. Independent School District 518 is joining all public school districts across the state to celebrate School Board Recognition Week to honor local board members for their commitment to the children of Worthington and the surrounding communities.

 “It takes strong schools to build a strong community, and these men and women devote countless hours to making sure our schools are helping every child learn at a high level,” ISD 518 superintendent John Landgaard said. “They make the tough decisions every month and spend many hours studying education issues and regulations so that they may provide the kind of accountability our citizens expect.”

Landgaard said the key work of school boards is to raise student achievement by:

  • Making student achievement the top priority;
  • Establishing standards for what students will be expected to learn and be able to do;
  • Ensuring progress is measured to be sure the district’s goals are achieved and students are learning at expected levels;
  • Being accountable for their decisions and actions by continually tracking and reporting results;
  • Creating a safe, orderly climate where students can learn and teachers can teach;
  • Forming partnerships with others in the community to solve common problems; and
  • Focusing attention on the need for continuous improvement by questioning, refining, and revising issues related to student achievement.

“Even though we make a special effort to show our appreciation for school board members in February, their contribution is a year-round commitment,” stated Landgaard.

The ISD 518 School Board will be holding its regularly scheduled February meeting on Tuesday, February 18th in the Worthington High School Media Center at 5:15 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
